But I'm seeing a lot of illustrations just added there for fun, usually at the end of chapters, and it is really dissapointing coming from authors, who are a kind of artists.

I also want to add that illustration are not necessary to the story, and reading has always been about imagination.
What am I even seeing here? :blob_popcorn_two:

Basically, we are having a discussion about illustrations that technically mean nothing much to the story, being created by AI. What's the big deal?
If the author wants to have fun, it's their decision. On a site, where readers love to stay "quiet", maybe pay attention to the story and engage with it; the author might pay attention to your opinion as well then.
But aside from that... If the gist of it is that it's not necessary and distracting, that means it's a matter of taste and that's not up to you to decide. And if it's distracting because you want to imagine the story yourself, it makes not a speck of a difference if it's AI or not, so that doesn't even mean shit.

A story that brings you no gain should also cost you no money. But if you got the money and wish to spend it, more power to you. Not everybody does, though.
I also offer my services in cover design on this site, because I know that's how it is. And yes, I used to get paid for that as well (actually, I still do). If someone has an AI generated cover, I don't care, because they don't offer their cover, or some random images to their readers, but the story behind it.
It's not that hard to tell the difference. :blob_cookie:

here's a screenshot of one of my covers. And I think its even smaller *yet* when floating by on the "just released" pile...

now lets see what it looks like the way I worked on it...
BetrayalCircle8.jpg

now then.
anyone NOTICE anything, about the differences between the thumbnail the potential reader sees, and the actual image?
kind of hard to miss it, you know.

not only I can't afford an artist, that can do better than THAT...
but lets suppose I could afford it, I had disposable cash burning a hole in my pocket.
first, it costs green stuff to get the artist to make something.
second? most artists want *multiple* of the same payment for the same artwork?
because when its a book cover, a magic wand gets waved and it needs to cost several times as much.

but lets say I have *that* much cash, too. I get the artist and pay them.

LOOK at the tiny THUMBNAIL.
even when you click on my book? it doesn't get much bigger!
the hell is all that money supposed to get me... its getting *squished* anyways.

the whole argument, is just silly.

I just paid what I consider a reasonable fee from one of SH's artists to make a new cover for DEN instead of the AI slop I had for a FF I make no money off of, but that was because I plan on hiring her when I send my OG work to Amazon for sale to do all it's art and wanted to see what she could come up with before I commited (Thanks again @pangmida)

No one should expect anyone to pay for something done as a hobby, and I'd bet most people who don't draw regularly could barely draw a stick figure lol

True unless you make money off a patreon then it could be considered an investment. Also I like your cover and on unrelated note I also had a book idea about "The Narrator" lol

hehe

I might revisit that (The Narrator) another day, just in a different format. I tried something I saw in a book 30 years ago, and ended up not liking it so put it on hold.

As for monetizing an FF, nope. Don't want to play legal games like that.

My own OG worlds I have no problems doing that, and will see if Patr or Amaz make more sense in about 6-8 months. =)

It does seem a bit more demanding than writing in a regular format (Quite strenuous already). Also wouldn't you be able to simply put a Kofi without locking any chapters behind paywall/ posting any chapters there at all?

Best of luck with your OG's :)

No. Monetization of fanfiction in any way is not allowed. Exception is when you have a written permission from IP owner or own the IP used.
By adding that one link you can endanger the whole site to legal problems, and naturally yourself if the IP owner wanted to escalate further for any reason.

Ai-chan would only be more than happy to hire an actual artist to draw for Ai-chan if readers pay for it.

Therefore, Ai-chan shall declare that any story that gathers a donation/income of more than USD500 shall have honest to god illustration drawn by an actual artist.

Don't say Ai-chan didn't try. Ai-chan's first book, Felicia's Second Life used human artist, but the income only barely cover the cost of the production and the art. Hiring an artist is too expensive for a free book.
