Despite knowing that litrpgs are the easiest way to break into the webnovel market, it took me years to write one because I had no interest at all in the genre. I tried once or twice to write a litrpg simply for the attention it could get me, but I always gave up after one or two chapters because I wasn't emotionally invested in the project at all. If I don't feel anything for the story I'm writing, I can't write it. Simple as. It wasn't until I came up with a plot, world, and characters that I actually wanted to tell a story about that I was finally able to write XNPC.
What about you? Would you be able to write a book just because the genre is popular and you could potentially earn money off of it, even if you didn't have an emotional connection to the story or characters?
I didn't even know what a LitRPG was before I wrote one. it's the same as writing any story, just add a few stupid numbers.
and before anyone gets on my case for "stupid numbers" I can show you my maths, and my statistics. Goodluck actually reading it.
There isn't an author alive who can write in every genre on earth. Even the most skilled and prolific writers specialize in a small handful of genres. For you to claim that genre doesn't matter is one of the most pretentious thing a writer could possibly say.
Guarantee, I have a backlog of books in my archive. Just because I personally don't like the genre or the story, doesn't mean I haven't written one. I needed to know what genres I could sell, and I was advised to write a variety of genres to know which I was good at. The ones I felt I was personally good at were fantasy, and romance. but I've written more than a couple dozen books that won't ever be published, not because they aren't written well, but because I choose not to try with them. I would dislike it if they sold well and were expected to write more when I'd rather write something else. But that rolls into the next part-
That depends. You'd definitely have have a connection to your paycheck, but does that extend to you having a connection to the story itself? Or would the promise of being paid be enough for you to hunker down and suffer through a story you wouldn't have wanted to write otherwise?
How much are we talking? because a good pay in advance would aid me in reconsidering what genres i like. I personally hate writing scifi, and mystery. It's too complicated to have great mystery and puzzles and describing futuristic technology when half the population is dumber than rocks. They complain everything, especially if the fictional death ray is powerful enough to be a death ray... "is it even possible?" unless you hand hold them through every step of the process its a pointless endeavor, and by then... UGH just shoot the main protagonist, I quit. Do some math yourselves... (gets handed large sack of money), WHAT I MEANT to say was people are geniuses, and im dumb, and I have a need to explain completely how case 1 was solved with the use of a single paperclip, fully describing every detail in order to get my own stupidity out of the way. Please, enjoy the story. Next book will be out in three months.
Hell, there's been a couple times people have offered me upwards of $500 to write them a weird fetish story. I took one look at what they were into and

$500 for a simple smut fetish fanfic? Easy money.
I have a file named "For the love of your soul do not open" within "im telling you no" within "these are for paid commissions" within "whoever reads this stop" within "If you are reading this go no further" within "mature only" within "18+ don't open"
