I'd assume it depends on your audience if you are planning to sell the story. A lot of readers want something familiar to sink their teeth into. It's not that one way of writing is "right" and another "wrong" so much as YOUR specific readers are probably going to be expecting certain things.
You can do something else instead, that's fine. Is your goal to write your story in the way that you best envision it? Or to sell it? Only in a fortunate few cases do those two things overlap.
