    Tags in a Novel

Some element of readers being able to tag is interesting but the NU process, as some have suggested to be used, is too prone to abuse and trolling. Perhaps something like a small section under the tags part that might be "reader suggested tags" or something. That way readers could suggest tags...

    Open-source Software for Writing

bibisco looks interesting, especially for fleshing out characters. I mostly write in wordpad because it's simple, easy and always available.

    Adult tag seems common here.

I think that's the general view of how to perceive those tags. There's actually another thread like this one that, i think, has a similar answer. @OP TL;DR: "Adult" tag and "sexual content" content warning is a good sign that there will be sex or things of a sexual nature in a story.

    Dates

I usually will have them at the beginning of a chapter when there's been a passing of time to warrant it. Usually, if a week or more has passed in-world between chapters then i'll add a date (and a general setting location where applicable). If it's easy to keep track of just by saying '2 days...

Should the narrator call them by their nickname right away?

If it's been revealed even once to the readers, it's fine to use it when referring to the character outside of character speech.

Feeling intimidated by the bombastic language people use in their stories.

I'd say match your word usage to your topic. If you're writing relatively simple, common stuff then dont complicate things by using unnecessary complex words. However, if you're writing something that involves a technical theme or topic and your character knows about these things to any sort of...

Genre confusion (regarding gender bender and girls/boys love)

it's complicated. In a way, FD is right as the previous gender of the said genderbent (the "mental" gender) can be a big part of determining what sort of story something can be, it's not always the sole judging criteria. For example, the GL novels you mentioned. Those stories, for someone like...

Genre confusion (regarding gender bender and girls/boys love)

gender bender and BL/GL has always been a topic of contention. But here's my opinion: Both and... neither?. It's a really complicated conundrum. How deep and complicated do you want the story to be? On a bit of advice from a consumer of genderbender GL, if you're going to do the deep...

How do you write a flashback into the middle of a chapter?

In what style is your story written? third person or first? do you write in the present tense or past? I have one flashback currently in my story but it's written as if the character themselves were talking about what the flashback is about

How Horrible/Miserable Can I Make It For My Main Character In The Beginning?

depends on what your aiming for with the story. For example, large parts of the first arc of my primary story are 'break the cutie' moments to develop my protag's descent into functional insanity. As a contrast, the second arc only has one major moment at a similar level but quite a few moments...

    Fanfiction setting. Bad idea?

I agree with some in this thread. Rather than writing a fanfic of what is a horribly mediocre and boring webnovel, why not just take the general concept and tweak it in ways you think it would be better then write originally from there. One of my oldest stories started from a thought like that...

Female protagonist + girl love mystery

so you feel weird because it seems (key distinction here) like almost all novels with female protags on SH are girl's love? So is it that you have a problem with girl's love or are you just plain weird?. Would you have the same reaction if the tags were Male Protaganist and boys love? SH is...
