Recommendations A mc who genuinely cares about others.

Most of my MCs are good, though some are more selfish than others. In my most recent novel, Orphan Queen Valkyrie, Val is a street-smart orphan who's repeatedly incensed by the unfairness and injustice that she sees in the world and she does what she can to stop it. She helps her friends, her...

why does the published chapter look different from the how I edited it?

Since I use a lot of italics in my writing, I need some small level of built-in formatting. MS Word has a pretty complex text format that can mess up during copy-paste, depending on how you format. Instead, I use MS OneNote which has a more stripped-down but still decently-featured text system...

Thinking up the way your characters fight: fighting styles

In my latest series, Orphan Queen Valkyrie, the eponymous character, Valkyrie Valicent, is an incredibly skilled fighter with a lot of magical talent to boot. She labels herself a 'battle-witch' and becomes progressively more badass as the story advances, from a scrappy orphan to a terrifying...

    About religion in writing.

Yes, I know an agnostic atheist is a thing because I am one. My little quip was whether you could be a dyed-in-the-wool one. And, while I accept your framing of a/gnosticism, many people don't, and it has only become a popular framing in recent years (the past 15 years or so). Before that...

    About religion in writing.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool agnostic atheist (if there can be such a thing), but I include religion in many of my stories. Coming from an intermittently-Christian family (one side of my family is much more religious than the other side), I often have devoutly and/or vocally Christian characters who...

The inherent toxicity in the online space

Obviously, some online communities are deeply, unforgivably toxic. But in most online communities, the vast majority of people are friendly and supportive. Unfortunately, human psychology works against us. All of us (or nearly all of us) have a negativity bias, where we perceive negative...

Would you write something you hate if you got paid a lot to do it? (Poll)

Sure, I'll write it, but I'll need to get paid $$$. At least $200/hr. Otherwise, my day job skills are pretty transferrable.

Novels with a change of genre and a weak protagonist

My novella, Unusual Cases, involves a protagonist who is physically weak, who changes genders, and who is protected against friends at several pivotal points in the story. It is also very, very smutty with a pansexual protagonist, so reader beware. In my Natalie Bryce novels (On My Best...

Why is every almost fantasy adventure story with a female MC gender bender?

Then I take it you haven't read any of my GB stories, because I don't think I've ever written a story like that. And I would be annoyed by an author doing that, too.

Why is every almost fantasy adventure story with a female MC gender bender?

I write mostly GB with various fantasy themes and, honestly, my non-GB stories get about 1/10 the views and 1/4 the feedback. If more people read my other stories, I'd write more of them. I've got a fantasy story with a spunky orphan FMC coming out soon, and I guess I'll see how that goes...

    Nvm lmao

I just stopped back to check this post after a while away, and I want to say: I'm the one who first brought up copyright issues (though it almost certainly would have been brought up by somebody else), but I earnestly hope I haven't discouraged you from making covers or given the wrong...

    Beta Reader Appreciation

Here's a piece of advice I read a while back about beta readers, and I try to take it to heart when I'm writing: When somebody points out problems in your writing, they're almost always right. When they tell you what to do about them, they're almost always wrong.

    Nvm lmao

Those are some nice-looking covers! I usually make my own covers, so I don't need one, but I have got a question that I imagine most authors will want to know: what are the usage rights on your covers? Are they made with license-free clip art or are licensing and rights something that the author...

Girls Love tags used in novels with male romance

Novels can be complicated, and they often defy easy categorization. For instance, I have tagged my novel, Visions of Dark & Light as GL genre because a major part of the plot is the sexual awakening of my FMC (Anise, a mage in training), and her crush and subsequent romantic relationship with...

Girls Love tags used in novels with male romance

I have to disagree - this may be a personal preference of yours, but this isn't the absolute and inviolable definition of what a GL story is. In my mind, a GL story is one where a girl-girl romantic pairing is a major focus (or the major focus) of the story, but it doesn't preclude other things...

Word Density, am I writing too many words?

I'll reiterate what others have said and add a bit on top of that: the density of your story has more to do with pacing than it has to do with chapter length. If you're worried about chapter length, though, here's my advice: cut your chapters in half and then post them separately. My rule of...

I have a lot of ideias but don't know how to write.

It's worthwhile to ask whether you actually *like* writing. Some people like to think up story ideas but find actually writing them out to be drudgery. For writers like myself, the writing is a fun artistic exploration, but not everybody feels this way. If you love to write, just practice it...

Is anyone else bothered by the large amount of gl novels containing het?

The metaphor still doesn't work. It's only bait if it's mostly Chinese food on the menu. If there are two or three niche fusion dishes, then it doesn't ruin the restaurant's billing. Now, if you're saying there are GL stories where the romance and sex is primarily het, then I agree with you...

Is anyone else bothered by the large amount of gl novels containing het?

I'm not sure where the confusion is here. People write stories about different things. In GL stories with lesbian characters, you're unlikely to come across het romance. In GL stories with bisexual characters, you're a lot more likely to, because that's what the author wrote into the character...

Is anyone else bothered by the large amount of gl novels containing het?

This is technically true, but the vast majority of GL with bisexual protagonists involve some degree of het sex, too. I'm offering a practical solution, not a perfect one. A perfect one would be a non-het tag of some sort.
