Personally, I don't go all-in on it. Although I do split my personality traits and scatter them around in my characters. If I enjoyed the plot, and the writing itself (prose and stuff) are good. It's all a personal preference thing, so I don't think I have anything "quantitative" enough to help you.

I keep an outline and plan a lot. I also write "personal checkpoints" for characters, such as key moments of developments or planned "impactful" moments. I just struggle with winging stuff because in my experience, they lead to plot holes or stuff that I had to go back to patch up. On the other...
