Even if I think they're kinda stuffy and sterile, I keep coming back to Steely Dan. They're not emotionally resonant enough to be a favorite, but they definitely know how to make a nice tune that sticks.
But the most interesting thing about the Dan is the contrast between their sophisticated sound and their lyrics about the absolute dregs of society.

Jimmy's sloppy fretwork kinda works here. Plant delivers a charming tale of a love almost lost because he was waiting on the wrong spot for his date. JPJ plays bass.

This song feels like a VHS tape, despite it being released in 2012. Honestly, mixing the introspective lyrics and guitar vocabulary of emo with the dense sound of shoegaze sounds like an obvious choice, like French fries and ice cream, so I'm surprised it took until these guys to really try it out.
Just finished with a scholarship interview. Lowkey think I nailed it, but watch it be revealed that some minor thing I said had irrevocably fucked up my candidacy. -
