I personally have thought about this a lot and have determined that it would be rather creepy and seem desperate. Just ask people publicly for ratings so that you're not scaring away your reader base. At the very least it will help you avoid any trouble that may arise from contacting random people. Also, I like your pfp. I just happened to pick up the Spice and Wolf anniversary omnibus recently and I'm loving it.

...contact my readers on an individual basis to beg for ratings? Haha!
:blob_frown: are ratings important? Heh, never noticed that.

If you have a reader leaving comments and interacting with your story, then sure give it a go, why not? Maybe you'll get more feedback that way.
If it's just a random reader that is playing dead, then you are just pathetically grasping at straws. :blob_nom::blob_facepalm:

I agree. People don't like feeling they are being hunted down on the internet ?, regardless of any positive or negative intent.

And yeah, asking publicly is the best approach. Ain't nothing wrong with leaving a simple "Reviews and Ratings are appreciated" (or anything similar) in the synopsis. The message will be out there, and if anyone wants to answer it, they will ??.

I will block you if I am your reader and you did just that.

I don't want to sound mean, but going to others' doorsteps just for ratings is akin to getting visited by Jehovah Witness.

If I can call the cops (mods) on you, I will do so.

You can do a peer review by having an exchange agreement. Or you can just go post on RRL, they have a bunch of people there readying to review your work. But if you just want ratings... no.

Put a footer at the end of your story saying something like

"Hey, lowlives! I need ratings. Give me ratings if you want to simp on me more. If you give me a good rating, I will deign to give a good stepping on your face with these lovely feet right here."

Are ratings even important? I'd probably rate you, but I'd feel apprehensive about you.

Ratings are actually really important. It shows people what others have to say about your work and whether or not they should even give it a try. The more rating you have the more people are going to trust the rating that is given. For example, would you rather trust a story that only has 2 ratings but has 5-stars or a story with over 30 ratings but it has 4-stars? Proper reviews are even more important as they can tell the author where they can improve as well as where they are succeeding. It's part of the reason why I ask for them so much. I want to know where I can improve and what can stay the same.

I'm not really familiar enough with SH to worry too much about ratings here. I'm trying to get people to rate my story on RR, because I want to hit Rising Stars. It's a huge boost to growth and follower count if you can get on there, that's the reason.

All right, got a lot of interesting comments here, and I've determined that it's a really bad idea to PM readers begging for ratings, lol.

That's understandable. Though I left RR a while ago for various reasons, I did well on there. However, I will never go back.

People avoid reading stories with a low rating score or a low number of ratings. When I say people, I mean more than one hundred authors that sit on the SH forum. You know, those who talk about how ratings and a large reader base don't matter.

Jeeze! I hang out in your back yard near your trashcans just ONE NIGHT to ask for a rating on my story and you go and post a thread about it. How passive aggressive can you get?
