Exactly the same feeling. I thought I knew a lot about armor and medieval warfare. But I wanted to be as accurate as possible and after some research, it turns out there was a lot that I didn't know.

Kind of shakes your whole world up when you learn that spears were the dominant weapon, armor was made to deflect arrows, and deflected arrows become wooden hand-grenades when fired from warbows into armor. To me, that would make a story more fascinating; in the minds of many people, if their Legolas doesn't fire 50 arrows a minute that can punch through even the heaviest of armor it's not fun.

Sadly spears are not as cool as two-handed swords in literature even though they were the ultimate weapon.

Hmm, I was under the impression that Goblins came from kobolds. The word kobold stems back to greek times. Theres also the element cobalt named after them.

And yeah, I've always refered to dragons as serpents instead of lizard.
Well, I tend to look at the lore of various fantasy creatures in isolation (other than dragons and the fire bird, because I just really like those two in particular and really dived deep into them), so you may very well be right about that and I may very well have missed something. After all, the Angalo Saxons from the germanic regions were among the first settlers of the English isles, and they may very well have carried over stories about Kobolds that evolved in their own direction to eventually become goblins.

(Honestly, I find goblins far less interesting than Kobolds. We already know just about everything the lore has to tell us about them due to how well it's retold in modern fantasy stories. Kobolds, however, are the ones who have been not so accurately portrayed, and their original lore is a little more nuanced than goblins, which makes them quite interesting.)
