Exactly the same feeling. I thought I knew a lot about armor and medieval warfare. But I wanted to be as accurate as possible and after some research, it turns out there was a lot that I didn't know.
Kind of shakes your whole world up when you learn that spears were the dominant weapon, armor was made to deflect arrows, and deflected arrows become wooden hand-grenades when fired from warbows into armor. To me, that would make a story more fascinating; in the minds of many people, if their Legolas doesn't fire 50 arrows a minute that can punch through even the heaviest of armor it's not fun.
