While there's a previous thread about your preference in writing characters, I ask, what is the type of character 'partner' or 'lead' (male/female/other) you want to write?

For me, I love writing FMCs that can fight, think rationally, have their own ambitions relative to the main character and actual use in the story. I hated character leads written just to magnify the qualities of the 'hero'/'heroine'.

Even as when I'm writing an isekai harem story.

Most people want to read Main Character who are strong, intelligent, independent, isn't weak ass, doesn't take shit from anyone, not dense with romance, actually listen clearly to people muttering, anti-harem & anti-cheating, Never chase or desire romantic partner, desired a lot as romantic partner but MC must reject them at first, Freed people from slavery, never gives up even if the fight already ridiculous, cautious borderline paranoid, win any competition or fight to the end with the principle (must win, not winning ≠ not main character), never suffer lack of privacy from popularity rise nor suffering political backlash of scheming enemy, etc, etc,

:blob_pat_sad: Uh, what? Me stupid, me didn't understand the question.
I believe what Hans is asking is what kind of accompanying/supporter/lead character you most like to write next to the mc. Love interests, if you'd prefer, although not only limited to them in the strict meaning.

My answer is independent, but devoted... and not much past that. I've written a whole lot of various characters, and those are just about the only traits they had in common.

Hmm, I'm not really sure, as I write my 'partner' characters very differently in each story. But... if I had to say, it'd be the compatibility with the other characters as well as the chemistry between the ML/Fl :blob_melt:

I enjoy writing partner/lead characters that aren't reliant upon the MC but instead only stick around because their priorities are in line. That way they have room to grow closer over time without it feeling forced.
Yes!
It's so much more fun if both characters have their own motivations, can achieve things independently, but will also mutually support each other.

And I'm not just talking ' I'll be your emotional/moral support and you can do everything else'

Imo, romance is best if both parties are equal.

I much prefer to write same-gender relationships; I strongly dislike it when the love interest in gay or lesbian romance is, for lack of a better way to describe it, so nice and likeable and fluffy that they’ve got all the spice and personality of blancmange pudding — I prefer writing messy characters in general, but much moreso when it comes to romance. Maybe not always truly messed up
but at least a little messy.

I do like deliberate power exchange in romantic/sexual relationships, but that doesn’t preclude the characters being on an equal footing in terms of narrative focus, and the amount of, for lack of a better word, attention the author gives them.

And of course, that kind of power exchange aside, even a ceaselessly devoted partner ought to have more to them than The Love Interest. Else you might as well replace them with a body pillow.

I prefer if the partner actually is in an exchange with MC and vice versa. As in, they can bounce off one another to grow stronger like a symbiotic relationship. Any other relationships just feel like it need to be nip from the bud.

And that I don't just mean in the violence department, but as well as in the emotional department. Eg. They can commit genocide together and can suffer trauma together.

I must uphold my honor. I challenge you to an honorable knight's duel, 1v1, loser is banished to the shadow realm for all eternity. The power of my ultimate monster, the blue eyes white dragon, shall bring me victory.
I'm a ronin, so I don't give a care about your honor. If I ever show up to duel you, you can bet you have a sniper rifle trained to your head, just in case I started to lose...
