Question for non native english.

Do you write your story directly in english or do you write first in your native language then translate it to english?

And how deal with grammar, tense or other sentence structure?

As someone that grow in country where the main language doesnt really care about languange structure and learn english myself from reading and rarely speaking or writing i always feel that i doesnt have a capabilty to write a good sentence structure or in natural way.

Any tips to improve my english writing skill? Like maybe learn this part first the that part.

Thanks you in advance:blob_reach:

Directly in English.
I deal with grammar by learning English and using programs like Grammarly to help me out.

Any tips? Write.

The difference between my current chapters and the very first ones I wrote 4-5 years ago is night and day. Improvement only comes with experience.

I started with DeepL and evolved to writing directly in English. It's much faster, and for me, DeepL lacks certain word choices. For a spell-checker, I use Grammarly Premium(got it cheap for 60€/year)

I write it first in my language and then translate it. It kinda suck when you see the numbers of words decreasing by 300.

For grammatical and tense, I use grammarly. Chatgpt can also be used.

Write and read more, you will improve. Also, if you publish chapter, accept the corection the readers freely give you. A lot helped me in that way, and it become easier to write when listening to their advice.

English is not my first language, and my tip is:

Always write directly in English.

Use Pro-Writing-Aid or Grammarly for checks. Keep in mind those have been designed to write official corporate letters and don't understand the creative writing.

Never use ChatGPT or anything that actually rephrases the sentence structure, and if you do, use it very sparingly. The so-called "AI" have a specific way of phrasing things. It's not worth the effort, and people could pick on that.

Once you are several chapters in, as for the volunteer to proof-read your chapters one by one, in any pace he or she sees fit. This is the best way to learn from errors. You would get very few volunteers for that, if any, it's very work intensive, but helps more than any threads to point out errors, and it gives you a chance to improve over time.

Don't bother with threads asking for advice.

Actually, I have experience with this question. I'm multi-lingual. A linguist. Not a degreed linguist but I study languages for my own research.

And the big problem is... well I think in my primary language. But when I am... even when I'm fluent in another language or semi-fluent, I still can't say all the things I can say in that other second language that I can say in English. And I'm more educated in my primary language; which is English. And so when I go to say something in Spanish or ... whatever other language I've become fluent in... I still can't quite dig out as many details or flavor. It doesn't mean I'm not fluent. But its like,... my mind is very grounded and educated in all these flavors of intellect that have been developed in my mother tongue, English.

So if you go to write in your second language you can miss that because you'll miss details. You will always be able to describe more in your home language.

Does this mean you should quit? NO> Don't quit. It doesn't mean you should stop or have to do it my way either. But you can think about. OK, how do I make sure I don't lose depth and details when you write in that other language? Ask yourself how to check yourself.

I'm the opposite. I suck at my home language, but good in my second language (English). My mum always tell me to learn english, but not much about my home language (still only know the basics) ?.

Here is another problem, i use my native languange and english when im thinking. No, im not multi lingual per se its just that i rarely reading in my native language after i can read english. And when im talking i mixed my native and my local languange.

So sometime when im know some word in english it takes time for me to remember that word in my native language. And some word that i strongly remember in my native it take long time to remember that word in english

Looking on my past note that i write, it clear that the recent i wrote the more english word that i use (except some word that for some reason i forget). Its just that because i dont have some formal experience on english literature i fear that what i wrote yeah i can read it just fine, but for native it read like shit.

I read others' replies, and since no one mentioned it, here is what I can tell you.

To improve your English, if you don't have anyone to talk to, use AI companions. I'm not talking about ChatGPT but actual companions. You can talk with them and ask them to correct your grammar if you said anything wrong.

Even with ChatGPT, you can do that. But you have to train it first, which means specifying what level of English you're trying to talk, how friendly the AI should be, and if you want to use day-to-day language or book language.

Look at it as a learning tool, not a writing tool. It helps.

You have to believe in yourself, my native language wasn't even recognized till 2011, it was just a spoken language, and AI doesn't even understand it,

Read a lot, write a lot, and I'm not going to say don't use chatgpt, but avoid learning its style
