Idk I hate the hypocrisy some authors have I've seen around the internet. Why do we complain about AI Writing then turn around and use AI art? We are all in this together. You hate all of it or none of it here. If you hate AI Art, then PAY YOUR ARTISTS! They need to eat just like you or I. Idk, It's been simmering in my brain for a while.

Because our stories are free. Cover art is not. Demanding that we give you money for something we're not being paid for is pure entitlement. End of story.

I mostly agree with this but not the omission. @OtherSlater Writers here do get paid if the readers tip them or subscribe to their Patreon or Kofi or whatever. There are some who sign contracts... hopefully healthy ones. :blob_hide:

If artists want to get paid, they will open a vgen. Just like how if writers want to get paid they will open Patreon or sign a contract.

I paid for all my covers and don't use AI art anymore, but I recognize the value in a free cover. I did them as well. Most aren't going to want to pay big money for something they do as a free hobby.

They could just as easily use a crayon to draw their cover instead of AI art, and it won't make a difference. Don't yell at hobbyists, start picketing the companies making the AI if you really believe it.

I always say, once your story actually starts making money, you need to commission a real cover. But if you tell someone who's entertaining you for free that they need to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on cover art just because you don't like AI, the next words out of your mouth had better be "here's the money you'll need to do it."

I agree, everyone should pay me, mhm. Just me, no one else. :blob_uwu:

Jokes aside, as much as I dislike AI pictures, I do understand most writers do not have the time to learn art nor the money to commission an artist. It's much easier and faster to just put in a prompt and make a fitting cover so they can focus on writing, for free. I doubt people want to spend money for just a hobby anyway. Though, I feel like when you're making enough money on a publication, maybe hiring a real artist would be better since the work would be original.

That being said, I miss the times when authors took stock images online and made the campiest, most raggedy looking covers ever on Photoshop or some free program. It was free, it was original (to a degree), and everything looked different.

actually starts making money
And if that money is enough to be considered a salary. Because cover art prices are nonsensical, unless you know someone... And then you also need to be hopeful that you commission that art for a book that will be successful. Because you can't be sure, unless you are already deep into the book, to see if it gets traction or not.

Otherwise, you just splashed out many times $60 or even $100 (and that's not even a professional cover, which can go up to $400) on something that won't bring in $1 a month.

Its a buisness, and you can't invest unless you already have the capital for it, and lets be honest... most people don't.

Tl;dr

I don't care if people use AI covers in this economy.

Thankfully I have a little sister who... oh, it's been more than a few years since she graduated university, but if I want to commission art, she's my go-to out of familial obligation; plus she's good. See?

I guarantee that if someone had spun a story about how stock images were stealing jobs from artists and photographers because people could just copy them off the internet for free, people would have been just as outraged by that as they are by AI.

They were! That's why a lot of those photos now have transparent brand signatures across the whole image. :blobrofl:

Ah yeah, I said I paid for all my covers. Except that crimson queen one. I just made it on Canva with bat assets and text on a background.
