The worst part (or most funny part) of the whole debate is still, tho, that the whole outcry wouldn't have happened (and I dare say they'd get praised for their ingenuity) if they switched the protagonists and had made the girl a Ronin and Yasuke a Ninja. I'm not familiar with Assassin's Creed and generally stay away from Ubisoft, EA, and similar companies.
There needs to be a distinction regarding Yasuke and the inconsistencies with the Japanese setting. On one hand, I think the controversies are excessive as it's important to guarantee freedom of expression and the ability to reinterpret history in a fantasy story.

However, if the objective is to be historically accurate, then this is a total fail. It's similar to the concept of a black Cleopatra or Romans being portrayed as black. If it's a documentary or educational content, it's essential to stay true to the sources and not invent falsehoods to appease a "modern audience". Just as whitewashing is unacceptable, blackwashing is also intolerable.
