It depends on the setting of the story for me. Male leads are more interesting for kingdom building or power scale stories to me while female leads are more interesting to me for exploring contrasting views or interpersonal dynamics, especially in a fantasy novel setting.

whoever written well. i typically read GB story since fem protagonist's story often act very out of their gender. they would often steel into romance domain (where this strong girl suddenly fallen for this strong guy, this dominant male for no reason) , or this girl act like a man for no reason, because the author apparently also a man. to write a fem protagonist was very hard, since they have a week of nerf each month, where their emotion is unstable...
For GB story, while this girl act like a man, it reduce the illusion that it's actually a woman, make it more believable when they act like male.
For male protagonist? whoever funnier is winning in my opinion.
nonbinary protagonists also interesting tho.

After being married twice and raising 3 daughters, I have ZERO interest in female viewpoint fiction, especially since most of them are male viewpoints with their P replaced with a V.

The real reason fathers don't understand their wives and daughters is because they choose not to... understanding them edges depressingly close to friggin' hating them. I'd rather love them and immerse myself in willing ignorance.

Male,

Reading or writing, I always try and self-insert myself into the MC... and I am not a woman.

I am practicing writing from a female perspective from time to time, but for the most part I stay with my MC other than a few short paragraphs every few chapters to show another persons perspective.

For reading... There are a couple books with a FMC I like, but overwhelmingly, male MCs are my preference

I tend to default to reading female MC if I have nothing to read, but will also read male MC if the synopsis is interesting.

I prefer Male MC cause I grew up with action story like Artemis Fowl, Alex Rider, Harry Potter etc. So far, very few female MC gives off that same vibe like male MC do, as they mostly cater to romance.

Female protagonist with a gruff old man's voice like Fuuma Kotaro from Nitroplus' Muramasa.
Checkmate, all of you who chose poorly.
