Hey everyone, this will be my first post here.
I had a random thought and now I’m curious. I’m pretty sure every place has a story people avoid talking about at night.
Maybe it’s something in the forest.
A woman in white near a river.
Strange sightings.
Footsteps at midnight or a random call for help.
Something that only shows up after midnight.
You get the idea. So this thread is for that.
Share your local urban legends, regional ghosts, superstitions — anything mythical or eerie that you heard growing up. It doesn’t matter if it’s famous or obscure.
Let’s build a global folklore collection in one thread.

I’ll start with one from my area:
In my area, there was a local legend about owls that would lure weary travellers at night. People said the travellers would go missing, and later be found hanging from trees during the day. No one really knew if it was just a warning tale or something else as no one had actually saw it.

So what’s yours?

Well... now the table has turned, they now fear me?
But why?

There's this urban legend that could at best scare you, or worst, kill you. If someone lives near a coconut tree, and in the middle of the night they hear something fell to the ground, sounding like a falling coconut, they are not to inspect it or god forbid touching it. Because it might not be what it sounds to be. This legend doesn't just apply in my local resident, but also my entire country. I've heard once from my friend, where he once heard something fell from a tree, a coconut tree, while passing by a forest. He went to check it with his friends. There's a coconut on the ground below the tree. When he touched it, the coconut shapeshifted into a face of the dead, lips grinning like it has found a prey.

Fortunately, they lived. I don't really buy his story, but there's a lot of stories like this to the point I chose to believe it at the same time not. You know what I mean? No smoke if there's no fire. And, to be honest, seeing just how active ghosts are in my country, I'd rather believe they're real. Because we got a ton of f*cking ghosts here in southeast Asia.

There's also this belief that, no matter the situation, you are not to take a pee or dump somewhere near a tree or somewhere cold. Examples: Sewers, and those pit-like hole on the side of the road. People believed that these places are inhabited by genies, ghosts, and we are to respect their home, akin to how we respect other people's home. I'd be laughing and saying it's fake, if not for that one time a boy in my area had this bruise on his sausage. Yes, I've seen the pictures of his sausage. Not because of p*rn, but because my friend told me that someone just got assaulted by a ghost. Yeah, you guessed it, the boy got assaulted by the ghost because of peeing under a tree people believed to be occupied by mystical beings. For 3 days straight, the boy's sausage was purple. I am not joking. No medical assistance could revert the damage done to him. After 3 days, however, the bruise magically disappeared, as if it was never there in the first place.

That's mine.

I always imagined genies in lamps, not hanging around trees and sewers :sweating_profusely: Is that a specific regional belief?

I became an urban legend at the camp I work at. It started with me going for walks in the woods every night. Eventually, some campers and Counselors started talking about seeing a shadowy figure roaming the woods and how it would disappear and reappear at random. Because one of my friends knew it was me, they decided to make a joke about it being "the nightwalker," a ghost that roams the property in search of it's body. Since it came from a counselor who had been there for years, most of the kids believed it and for the past 3 years, it gets spread around the campfire by past campers and Counselors alike. I still keep up with my night walks through the woods in the spring, summer, and autumn so kids keep seeing me and spreading the legend. I kind of feel like Ray L. Wallace.

My point is, a lot of urban legends and myths start with this sort of thing. Do something strange and people will gossip and exaggerate to their hearts content. Though if it's interesting enough, it'll stick for generations. People desire the unknown and interesting.

Aw man, I misread the title and thought this was a Monster Girls Club :blob_pat_sad::blob_pout: oopsies. My bad
glad I wasn't the only one...

For OP, not really. Outside of the indigenous natives' folklore of Glooscap and his brother Malsumis's battles, I can't think of any ghost/monster stories from here that were not manufactured in recent times to entertain tourists.

My town has stories about the local family who burned things down to claim on the insurance, but those are all sadly true.

There is a story more frightful and traumatizing than any other told around the world, and it is from here, our very own Scribblehub!

It is a story of betrayal, grief, and woes beyond mortal comprehension.

It frightens the young children into tearful fits, it brings youthful Maidens to the brink of despair, and even weather matrons clutch their pearls tightly when they hear this story.

For it is the story of none other than the legendary, infamous, most crotchety, bahumbuggiest individual we have ever had grace these pages.

Yes, it is the story...

I do hope you find success, Zachycards, even if you are a bit off in the head.
