Is your protagonist your favorite character?

When you create, who are usually your favorite characters in your stories? I'm just curious because it's actually pretty rare for my main character to be my favorite. Most of the time, I end up liking side characters or antagonists more. I don't know if that's normal, or if most writers tend to prefer their protagonists. It was just a random thought I had, and now I'm curious.I still love my protagonists, but they're not usually my top favorite.

I've written a lot of stories. Most of them aren't published, were dropped partway through, or aren't fully written yet. But if I were to list some of the characters I love the most from each one, it would be these. I'll abbreviate the story names since they aren't published, except Lucky God System, which is:

Chameleon (Lucky God System): minor antagonist

Fredrick (EH&W): major antagonist

Graham (SPR): major or main antagonist

Fen (Acos.): major side character

Annelise (OrCo): deuteragonist

Kimi (CITM): major antagonist

Severne (WC): major side character


That's just a few. I think the only stories where the main character is actually my favorite are the ones that don't have many characters in the first place. So you see what I mean?

Nah. My favorites are usually absolutely deranged supporting characters that I adore but don’t think I could sustain as a main central character. When I imagine an utter narcissist like Lividia or an eccentric genius like Rowe as MC I’m pretty sure it would wear out the joke through overexposure

I say this as if I have a grand body of work to be judged, but I'm counting the stories that only exist in my head too

Some stories call for a protagonist who's more of a blank slate, more palatable, and more like a camera that talks sometimes. While others are basically in-depth explorations of the protagonist. In the case of the latter, the protagonist is usually my favorite character, even if they oftentimes reflect the worst aspects of my personality and my deepest regrets

Isn't a protagonist just an excuse to write your ideal women?

Anyway, I think my favorite characters have to be lovers rather than MCs.

I thought my mc would be my favorite but I've found that my favorites to write are always the random side characters with massive plot points or the secondary main character. I assume this is because I write from the lense of the mc rather than the reader.

I'm a method writer, so I often end up 'acting' like my protag. Hence, I have to like him.

Advantage is, I can easily write his thought process in my works.

I like all my characters because I understand how they think and what motivates their actions. But there’s one character who moves like a shadow through the story right now and will only appear in the finale of the book. He was one of the first to be created in the story and will be the second main character in the second book. But I’m not even sure I’ll write that one. I think this character might just be my Alter Ego. that’s probably why I like him so much.
