Is your protagonist your favorite character?

As a Method writer myself, yeah I like my protagonist, as they usually carry a little bit of myself in them, male or female.

I thought my mc would be my favorite but I've found that my favorites to write are always the random side characters with massive plot points or the secondary main character. I assume this is because I write from the lense of the mc rather than the reader.

I'm a method writer, so I often end up 'acting' like my protag. Hence, I have to like him.

Advantage is, I can easily write his thought process in my works.

My favorite character is the one that I can use to create the most powerful emotional impacts in my readers. In that case, it would be my antagonist, a crime lord named Mez.

It varies.

• In the Jack Diamond stories, Jack (title character) IS absolutely my favorite, though some villains and side characters take the spotlight occasionally. Especially Jessica.
• In Strange Awakening ... I think Olean, despite only having a few scenes, may be my favorite, and Kelly's dad, who was both a lot of fun and painful to write.
• In Between Worlds ... I really like the Mother of Battle, and ... he'll be showing up in about two or three more chapters, Domelius the dragon is a scene stealer (at least I hope so). I also really like Audrey and Malcolm together - individually, I prefer David (the MC), but as a pair, that couple is "it." And then there's Pickles... Oddly enough, I thought Carol would be one of my favorites, but all the others (including Liz who started out as just a cipher and running gag and grew to be much more) have kind of pushed her aside.
• In Digital Cowboy there's a triumvirate between VICC (1), Dane and Joshua - though the many characters of "Jonesy" put him in the running.
• In True Blue Nathan probably holds the title of favorite, but I do really like Dina and ... the other narrator.

You won't be drained if it has become part of your personality...unless, of course, you did a character with a severe case of chuunibyou.

Surprisingly, my answer is no.
In Immortal Paladin, my favorite has to be Nongmin, an anti-hero emperor who had lived so many lifetimes in a vision, it changed him for the better or worse, who despite his flaws did his best to save the world and the protagonist in his own terms despite the world and the people probably hating him.
In Romance or Ruin, its Ark, the protagonist's dad and a badass villain who could stop time, and terrifying as F.
In my TNE fanfic, Extra Nobody, it has to be the recreated version of Kim Hajin, whose cheat had been made into a special mechanic I found especially pleasing.
In Unheroic Life of a Certain Cape, there is a villain named Pride who is a fearsome telepath with just as fearsome a technique, charisma, and very good at intimidating you.
In How to Cultivate a Game, it's the cute bunny that serves as the story's mascot
In The World That Broke, it has to be a Selena, a thief with a penchant for mischief, who could shapeshift and kill people because she could.

Each of my protagonists in each unpublished work I have half conjured is not my favorite. They are merely the instrument that the conflict centers around or happens to, the subject of struggle or suffering.

Look I am not saying the guy who gets a pet wyvern or the guy who has a giant mech + army of smaller robots is my favorite, but some arrows do point at them.

There is a long tradition of stodgy main characters having colorful sidekicks. They get to say and do things the protagonist wouldn't, giving us writers more freedom to express ourselves. I certainly like the minstrels and such I burden my heroes with.

While I do like most of my protags (not all of them are good people), I sometimes end up making a side character that sort of takes the lion's share of my love. Not always, mind you, but it's close enough to 50/50 at this point

Best I can think of is my Succubus protag, and while I think she's utterly batshit crazy and lovable, she really cant hold a candle to her mother. Sometimes you just get a character that hits all those absurd notes which stick with you because they're not always on the page.
