Is it ok to write a story where the main character is suicidal?

Suicidal as a character trait has a lot of baggage. Most people find killing themselves objectionable.. Human beings are hardwired for self-preservation: choosing to take your own life is so flagrantly against that instinct that people find it abominable. For Christians, mind you, God gave you life, to take it by your own hands is to reject the Lord's gift wholesale and forgo salvation. Heavy stuff, I admit, but it's a heavy topic.

What kind of suicidal is your character? Valuing your own life so low is a broad, vague character trait. It can describe religious zealots, those in total despair, warriors seeking death, those hiding incredible pain behind a façade. It's not like people just decide to kill themselves, or throw themselves into death out of the blue. Choosing death requires either strong convictions or a total rejection of life.

I say go for it: but be wary of your tone. Most people can't stomach true despair for long and most don't have the appetite to begin with it. Good luck on your work, though, I'd love to see it!

Forum says write anything. Ultimately that is your decision.

Hopefully not in a way that makes light of a situation or makes fun of those in those circumstances. Get the feeling the way many things done in stories like mental health are done so far off from what it actually is.

I have no idea why the "look at me I'm so alpha crowd likes you, I suspect it's because they equate the availability of vaginas ((of any shade or age apparently (((yikes))) )) and an aggressive display of desire for them with some kind of virtue they're supposed to aim for, or rather "virtue" in the same manner that certain ultra traditional Western Evangelical marriages turned women into subservient meat poppets cowed into dispensing their bodies, wills, and autonomy in direct contradiction of actual doctrine. If someone can be called an abusive manipulative bully they'll pin a damn medal ? to their chest but if they lose a few fights, or talk about their feelings or if "their" woman has goals that get placed over their own without getting sex out of it they're suddenly whimpy beta cucks, I could go on but this parenthetical tangent is getting rather long in the tooth, about as long as these crap writers SWEAR their protagonists' sausages are and feel the need to have every woman scream about as if oversized phalluses don't actually hurt them more often then not)

What the title says. I'm not going to actually have the main character commit suicide, but the character being suicidal is going to be used to explain a lot of their actions that differ from the norm.

Anything is okay nowadays because we live in a culture of mass apathy

Yes. Write the story you want to read, and someone else will also love it. This in particular sounds like it would appeal to people who have suicidal thoughts themselves, as they will be able to identify with the protagonist more. If you do it right, it could be very helpful to a lot of people.

Yeah go ahead and write it. What's the worst that's going to happen? You'll trigger a bunch of people who weren't going to read your story in the first place. (Well, either that or get banned because of "glorifying" suicide, which I doubt given the way this post was written.)
