Hell yeah it is. I can't even imagine how many world wars we must've avoided because we were too busy criticizing fictional premises and figuring out our issues in that relatively neutral setting rather than criticizing, y'know, the real people, issues and premises they were based on. Art, the arguments presented through art, and the criticism of art is basically humanitys main defense against ourselves.

Is the definition of criticism not "the analysis and judgment of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work"?
It is wrong.

No.

Yah but that's also why some people tend to dislike it. It's introducing a premise but then abandoning the premise.

A premise exists so that a story can exist. Using a premise then not using it in the slightest means there was no reason for that premise in the first place

its like making a "Hero must save the world from the demon king" and then suddenly your reading about the love life of a mole girl and a dragon while the premise just never existed
I agree in general. But a man turned into a woman needing only a few chapters to solve that confusion is absolutely fine. This premise is not a significant plot point. An isekai slice of life about cooking and traveling, with a premise where the mc is trapped in an isolated island or something doesn't need to be dwelled too deeply other than "I need to survive" before the promised cooking and traveling (or it's already there).

Well, you're allowed to think, read and write that ofc. But the rest of us are also allowed to feel burnt out on what feels like not just a bait and switch, but one that's starting to feel old.

It is called subversion of expectations.
Lol. No. It's definitely expected at this point. It was subversion of expectation for me the first few times I read gender benders, which was a decade ago.

Hell, I'm a little wary of gender benders these days in part BECAUSE I expect this.

I... don't think I understand? Are you saying that criticizing art isn't criticism? Or like that you shouldn't be able/allowed to criticize art? Or something else?
I think the Great SilusGimbel is saying art is not something that can be objectively criticized.

If it is expected it's not a bait and switch then. ?‍♂️

People can't criticize art because it can make the artist feel bad and hurt their feelings. We should embrace love and kindness instead.

I actually also hate it lol, if that's not already clear from my first post in this thread. I just don't see the need for any depthness in any fictions, at all, even though I would always choose them if forced to pick deep or not.

And I just want to argue for the sake of arguing I guess

What we should question is why OP leading us to gender identity or sex-theme as for why gender bender genre is flopping. Even though it's in its own already shitty and tiring.
