recently I started reading a novel called "Museum of the deadly beasts". I read about 12-13 chapters and really enjoyed the novel until one scene that made me drop it without hesitation.

I dont understand how some authors think and I am not judging anyone, as different people have different likes and dislikes.

Now, the scene that made me drop it was about a girl and an elderly man that came in for a beast appraisal. The Mc got confused since they had not brought any beast with them. When he ask where the beast that need to be appraised is, the girl got mad and turned around to leave. She falls down and the MC catched her, realising she is cursed.
After that she left and when the MC said he can help her the elderly man just straight out atacked him and said something along the lines of "know your place" or something and leaves.

Now that's all good and I don't mind it since I understand that in these type of novel the more power you have the more respect you get, or your family is powerful or whatever.

The part that got me so mad I dropped it is that after they left, the MC runs after them and he's like "Dont go , I can really help her".

Like bro, they just insulted you, they beat you up, and now you are running after them?
WHY??? You don't know them, they acted like a**holes and you still want to help them?
2 Chapters ago you humiliated a random guy for saying you suck and when this happens you still wanna help?

I don't get it, it just made me so mad, the novel is really good in the beginning and maybe the rest is amazing too, but how can I read the rest when one scene makes me drop it?

Again, I'm not judging as everyone read or written whatever they want but make it make sense please.

Does a curse make you act like an a**hole(girl)? Is the man also cursed? On scale 1-10 where 10 is 'Apocalypse Now, Lovecraftian horrors destroy the World', how bad is being cursed generally? Does MC have history of not cleansing a curse, with regrettable consequences?

Yes, some people can put aside their egos and want to genuinely do good and help others.
I dont think it is because of ego, like I said 2 chapter ago he humiliated someone for a petty reason.

the man is not cursed, only the girl. The MC was never cursed, he has a system that identified it and give him a solution for everything.

I feel like I am still missing some context here.
Because as is, you sound like a person with no empathy here.

As is, it could be just bad writing. Or the MC is a simp for pretty ladies. Or you are not well-adjusted.

As Corty said, some people can put aside their egos. I find the series of events believable as you describe.
So, I hope, your issue is with the inconsistency with how MC acts, not with how he decides to help.

Maybe he can realize that someone who has been cursed (probably for a long time, not just a day) is stressed and under duress. Maybe he can pick up on social cues when an insult is made out of spite and comes from a bad place and when it is not.

Maybe he is interested in the girl.
Maybe he is interested in the curse.
Maybe both.
Maybe it's Maybeline.

The thing is, if something like this makes you drop a novel, you are going to have a baaaaad time going forward.

I like reading novels, and it's not often I drop them but this one really makes no sense. I posted the screen shots of the novel. have a look

it's not that I don't have empathy but if someone doesn't want my help, insult me and even hurts me , why should I help? Ohhhh she's cursed, so frikin what?

Yeah, it is a you problem.

  1. MC was also getting rude, thinking he was taken for a ride
  2. In these types of books, touching a girl and holding her, especially if you don't even know her, is a big no-no. Of course, it gets mistaken for SA. Adapt to the culture that you are reading. Especially when the girl suddenly feels she was grabbed and can't get away. I guess you don't really read CN stuff. You really need to realize the cultural and historical differences.
  3. It is written clearly that she doesn't hear him after storming away. When the MC realizes the issue, they no longer feel vexed but instead know the girl's life is in danger and want to help.
  4. As for the man (prolly some guard), he only knows a random guy groped his young lady and now tries to go after her. Duh.
Clearly, the MCs interest is in the girl, and he knows what's going on while they think it's some kind of pet beast thing, not a curse.

Is the scene cliche? Of course, it is, its a CN cultivation novel. Is it worth dropping the book for? I don't think so, this is not even outrageous...

from my VERY bias perspective, being a CN cultivation novel is more than enough of a reason to drop the whole thing.

Kinda true, but my dood is on Webnovel from Qidian, the grandaddy Don Corleone of cultivation novels.

It's like a vegan going to a barbecue party and asking for grilled broccoli. Yeah, they probably will do it if you ask nicely, but what the fuck are you doing at a barbecue party in the first place?

Hey, a vegan barbecue party isn't bad at all, grilled tofu is amazing

I didn't say it was a vegan party.

Okay, new analogy:

If someone asks for LitRPG you tell them to go to Royal Road. If someone asks for cultivation stuff, you tell them to go to Webnovel.

Don't worry bro. That's just the MC and FL going through some plot for "character" development. LOL

I could see being turned off by the clunky writing shown in the screen caps, but the events seem like they MIGHT make logical sense, if we knew any of the characters. Or they might not. Still the writing is ... far from the best and probably a good enough reason to drop it IMO.

The only thing Qidian is the grandaddy of is mass theft of other peoples novels :giggle:
