Otherwise, 2k is nice.

Depends on the story I'm writing. Some perfer longer parts/chapters while others perfer shorter ones. I generally stick around the 2k mark. Seems to be a good in between.

2k-4k. Usually 3k, because you can safely fit beginning, tension, and end scene/cliffhanger easily into such amount of words.

The classic way to divide a stream of consciousness into chapters is to highlight a complete thought. It doesn't matter how many words it takes. In a single piece of writing, it can be anything for each chapter. Chapters that are too large are usually divided into episodes and in this perspective you can chop them into equal parts as you see fit.
You can stick to some sort of metric for each such part. Or cram a bunch of events into one pile to get to the right amount. But I don't think such a piece would be complete. It's a draft anyway.
You can start looking for the right size based on your personal capabilities. For example, you can easily write 2500 words in a week and are ready to publish such passages without delays and nerves. Do you have enough ideas to fill that amount of text with meaning?
It is better to write ahead of time to be able to revise what has already been written, then you can be satisfied with 1500 words per chapter. And for some, 5000 words a day is the norm. Just take note that this is done to systematize the writing. To keep yourself organized.

I would say that is true for traditional novels, but not webnovels. It really doesn't matter how long the chapter is, as long as it's consistently that long.

If you have one chapter 900 words and the next 5000 words it can work, but readers expect some amount of content, so it creates unnecessary friction.

Depends on the story and situation but for webnovels it seems an average of 1200-2500 is standard.

While I never set an official goal for chapter length, most of my stories have an average of about 1500ish words. I always write the amount I feel is appropriate for the character and what I want to convey in that chapter. It's basically a "where does this make sense to have a break" kind of thing.

My single PoV stories always range above 1000. My multiple PoV stories, on the other hand, are like a grab bag of chapter lengths. Sometimes it's 1500... sometimes it's 5000.... sometimes it's 500.

Like I said, it's not chapters, it's parts. And as I said, this fixed volume systematizes the writing. Nowhere did I say that chapters of different length should be posted once a week or a day. But there are resources where people publish text by dividing it into meaningful chapters as they are ready, not in one chunk. It's rare, but it exists. Publishing or writing a certain amount of text and chapter length are different things. Looking at the drafts published by the first writers online, people took their example and forgot about it. Nevertheless, large chapters are divided into sections numbered 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, and so on.

So section word number. It doesn't matter how you call it, call the overarching thing a chapter and what you release a section. All I am saying is it should be consistent release within some tolerance. Yes one section 900 and second 1500, why not. But not 5k.

On other hand, your section shoud have a few things like beginning and some kind of resolution end with a cliffhanger. You don't need to, of course, exception to a rule and all, but I was taught that is that what most readers expect and thus click on.

I've tried to set this and that goal, but the rubber band always snaps back to an average of 3000ish.

I'm drafting a journaling-format side project with about 500-800 words each for fun. Curious to see what happens!

It depends on the planned length of the novel. For most web novels, 1k-2k words should be ideal.

I initially started writing chapters around 4k because I tend to be a wordy writer and I also read a few Reddit posts that said fantasy novels tend to trend towards 3 or 4k.

However since I’ve started reading as well I’ve noticed many people seem to shoot for around 2 to 3k and have adjusted accordingly.
I read somewhere that attention rates are lower than they were a decade ago and accommodating that is also something to keep in mind.

I personally feel 1k is too little for any story unless it’s a small scene of GREAT importance. But that’s just a personal preference.

6666 words is the only correct answer. 42 words is too short.

2000+ feels good to me.
8000+ feels too long and risks making decide to go to bed in the middle of something.

The right answer in print media is "as long as the chapter needs"

With web serialisation, you want to balance the "this is too little" and "this is too long".

I aim for 2000.

I am long-winded, so my chapters sometimes run 5~6k.

Just the way it is!

I aim for 3000-5000 for weekly releases.

If a chapter is especially important to me and I need to write more and more, I can end up with 7000.
