How would you create distinction between Troll, Ogre, and Oni?

I know that writers are free to draw up whatever they want, that is not the point of this topic, however.

Also, I am not talking about Internet Troll, so please cut me some slack and let this discussion move on the way it supposes to be.

I would love nothing else but seeing how you attempt. You can let me know what inspired your creative decision. That would be more materials to enrich myself.

Well, not that I did all of those 'monsters/creatures' you mentioned, but in my works and illustrations, an Ogre is that typically huge creature with a peculiar way of talking. I refrain from portraying them as 'stupids/idiots' since I wanted to subvert the trope. My ogres are scientists, scholars, and monks.

For Oni, the closest equivalent in my work are the demons. If an ogre is a hulking figure, they have 'dainty' bodies and appearances akin to elves. The difference physically is their rounded, yet pointed ears, a pair of horns (as contrast to orcs with one curved horn on their foreheads). Socially, they are also achievers and civilized.

Trolls? Hmm...I don't know if my 'goblins' would suffice. I have no trolls in my story, but goblins in my work have no horns, and have considerable lighter (yellow green) skin than my orcs.

If anything, all of my 'villainous' creatures were actually civilized and reasonable races in my novel.

Troll: Bit bigger than a human, typically green skinned, regenerative powers.
Ogre: MUCH bigger than a human, vividly colored but come in variety, extremely strong.
Oni: More Human like, range in size from human sized to almost Ogre sized, can be similar in appearance to humans, or vividly colorful, horns are an important detail, stronger than an Ogre even in smaller bodies. Can potentially be an evolution from Ogres. Though that idea may be in my head because of Tensura more than anything.

Trolls are smaller, although still much larger than humans, with great regeneration and leathery skin. They also tend to be green and have some amount of hair or fur.

Ogres are larger, their skin is darker and their skin is more akin to rock, they don't have fur and are much stronger than trolls.

Oni's are closer to humans or elves, with red or blue skin and distinctive horns, they are far smarter and capable of magic. They are physically weaker than ogres, but still extremely strong. Their inteligeance, speed and magic makes them more dangerous oponents.

I personally see trolls as big, dull, humanoid monsters or a big, dull, humanoid race, depending on the setting. They occasionally have variants that have, for example, stony skin instead of muddy green. Traditionally they have strong regenerative powers and are either fat or thin like twigs.

Ogres are as intelligent as humans or slightly below them. They are warriors, they are big (scaled up human kind of big), very strong, and typically their skin can have varying color from similar to human's, through oranges and grays, all the way to red or purple. An important distinction is that they don't have horns, but have long tusks(?).

Oni's physique is similar to a human, but they are very strong. Their intelligence is on par or even higher than human's. Their typical defining characteristic are the horns - typically they have either one horn on their forehead or two above their eyes that are straight and protrude more straight up the longer they are; sometimes they are associated with oni's strength, which often includes magic.

Oni - used to be human but became demonic/monsters, solitary, murderous, dublicious, insidious
Troll - elemental monsters that nest in "boundaries", at the edge of civilizations eg bridges, abandoned villages and camps
Ogre - half giant, likes to eat people. roam in the forest near villages, nest in caves.

To me, there's three preferred types of trolls.

The classic (Tolkien) trolls are born of stone and earth, large and durable, with limited intelligence. They often have strange weaknesses like being turned to stone in the light.

DnD trolls are green and have superior regeneration, capable of recovering from wounds in moments. Most of them are giantkin like the classic trolls, but some are human sized. Warcraft Trolls, for example.

Age of Wonders trolls are large and intelligent in a cunning way- selfish and cruel. They're covered in fur and can build surprisingly powerful nations when left alone. Since they go out of their way to attack people though, they don't get left alone if other people are nearby. Elder Scrolls trolls fall into this category.

Mixing and matching is fine, but to be a troll it needs to have something or another from these types.
Ogres usually don't show up in the stories I read. Just DnD and Warcraft really come to mind. But I imagine Shrek Ogres show up alot, too.

Looking it up, Ogres are described as having two key traits:

They are large, with oversized heads.
And they eat people, particularly human children.

These traits have also been given out to other creatures like Giants, Cyclops, Oni, and so on. In these cases, the creatures are described as Ogres or as having Ogre-like traits. Like Giant Ogre, One-Eyed Ogre, Demon Ogre, so on.

So as long as you give them those two traits, it's an Ogre. They're a fucking ancient monster, so you have to really distill the details to get a good definition.

Those are very colourful depiction.

If we use myth as a source of inspiration then I do know that Oni and Troll share more similarities to each other than wth Ogre. Both Oni and Troll are powerful entities, rival even the gods.

The trolls have been considered rival races to the vanir and aesir gods in Norse myth. Meanwhile, there are a few gods who are oni in Shinto myth. The two gods, Fujin (wind god) and Raijin (Lightning God) are known to be oni sent by Izanami to capture her husband, Izanagi.

For Ogre, I mostly saw them as giants.

Appearance: Trolls are usually depicted as large, brutish creatures with long arms and crooked teeth. They may have a greenish tint to their skin and hair. Ogres, on the other hand, are typically larger than trolls and have a more muscular build. They often have large, bushy eyebrows and are portrayed as having a menacing scowl. Oni are a type of Japanese demon that are often depicted with red or blue skin, horns on their forehead, and sharp claws.

Habitat: Trolls are said to live in caves or in the forest, away from human settlements. Ogres are often portrayed as living in the mountains or in the wilderness. Oni are said to dwell in hell or in otherworldly realms.

Behavior: Trolls are known for their mischievous behavior, such as stealing food or possessions from humans. Ogres, on the other hand, are often depicted as violent and bloodthirsty, terrorizing humans and other creatures. Oni are said to be skilled in magic and may use their powers to manipulate humans or cause mischief.

Origins: Trolls are a creature from Scandinavian folklore. Ogres are commonly found in European folklore and fairy tales. Oni are a type of demon from Japanese folklore.

My personal take:

Trolls: 1.5-2x height of a human and lanky. Green Skin, regenerative powers, (warts or bulbous growths optional), prefers humid climates.

Ogre: 2x height of a human, bulky/fat but very strong. Dull yellow skin, somewhat unintelligent. Prefers dry climates or mountains.

Oni: 1.5-2x height of a human, very muscular, some number of horns. Prefers to live within travel distance of humans, may or may not be hostile to them. Varied personalities and intelligence, much like humans.

Trolls have green skin and rainbow hair (splice-up between Rainbow Trolls and D&D Trolls), and they have limb and organ regeneration.

Ogres have brown skin and basically more related to giants than trolls. No regeneration but freakish strength.

Oni have typically red skin, are Japanese, and have dark aura powers. Oni may or may not have limited regeneration (if so, usually not regrowth but reattachment).

Troll and Ogre is from Europe and both treated as dangerous monster,

while Oni is from Japan, and the locals worship them with respect and reverie.

I like to draw on the original folklore and more recent takes (which usually originate in D&D or anime) but try to give it a twist by recombining. These three are interesting because they kind of have the same role in folklore: “savage,” brutish and larger/stronger than people, who’ll bully you or kill you if you go into their territory. Probably originated as early “civilized” people’s way of talking trash about tribes with less technology who were furrier/hairier, or maybe even Neanderthals vs. homo sapniens. In stories, heroes defeat or trick these brutes to win treasures and rescue people, etc. But of course it’s more interesting these days to think about it from their point of view.

Ogre: originally French, same origin as “Orc” (from the man-eating god Orcus of the lost Etruscan civilization). Big, hairy, huge hands and heads, eats kids and adventurers for breakfast, don’t go in their homes. Most famous new version: Shrek. My take would be: once a noble people who were mutated and bred by wizards to be guards, shock troops and servants. If they were left alone, they’d be kind of like Klingons or Warcraft orcs, but they’ve been forced (through magic or breeding) into thinking all they can do is serve as muscle. Beige to dark green skin tones.

Troll: originally Scandinavian, and a little less hostile to humans, smaller than the others, more into hiding in the wild places. Original version turned into stone in the sunlight. D&D version was very different: distorted physique (long dragging limbs, huge nose, pits for eyes) and super-fast regeneration, have to kill with fire or acid. Known for guarding bridges. Most famous new version: probably World of Warcraft trolls, which are D&D trolls + Caribbean culture for some reason. My take would be: skinny and lanky like D&D / WoW trolls, if they stand all the way up they’re 1.5x as tall as a human. More cunning, selfish and hate humans, and the regeneration idea is cool. Maybe same kind of personality as DBZ Piccolo, but look way creepier. Blue/purple/black skin tones. LIve in small family-based tribes, deep in the wilderness.

Oni: originally Japanese, definitely not worshipped by Japanese people, little kids in Japan do Setsubun every February and throw beans at a grown-up dressed as an Oni to drive them away, because they’re evil spirits. Original version was big and muscular, wears animal skins, wields huge iron club (testubo). Skin color is important traditionally: blue and red, and then the powerful black ones. Always have horns. Most famous new version: probably “cute Oni” that look more like elves with horns, as in Re:Zero and Tensura. My take would be: size of a large, buff human, tough bodybuilder types, male and female. No more Bisho Oni. Horn shape depending on clan — long graceful horns are sword Oni who are snobby, little yellow & black cone horns are the rank and file bruiser Oni. Red and Blue Oni have opposite personalities (hot/cool) and often in relationships, but they’re all kind of bad-tempered. Black Oni are super-rare nobility. Unlike Ogres or Trolls, Oni have their own kingdom and society.
