Alright, let's assume you are all high-ranking generals at G-HACE (Grand Headquarters Allied Crossing Envoys).

Here is the current scenario:
20260412_201019.jpg

The Varexil Empire has occupied half of the Zelparian Continent for ten years. However, three years ago, they failed a massive landing operation on the neighboring continent of Tuaria. That failure became the turning point for the Empire, which was previously dominant at sea. It all peaked a year ago when 70% of their naval fleet was annihilated in a decisive battle.

This is where your role begins. Since their naval dominance is broken, you have been appointed to the council of G-HACE. Your objective is to launch a counter-attack and liberate the nations of Zelparia. After studying the enemy's failed landing, you’ve learned exactly what to avoid and what mistakes not to repeat. You chose the eastern coast as the primary target because it’s their weakest point, far from their reinforcements and supplies coming through the Crescent Strait. Oh, and about that strait, it is still heavily defended by the Empire's natural fortress-like geography, where they’ve stationed the remaining 30% of their navy. Long story short, you have successfully secured your beachhead on the eastern coast.

After liberating three countries, what is your next move? How do you plan to push into the heart of the Empire? For now, there are two main options on the table.

Option A: Inland Strike
A direct thrust through the center of the vast mainland. Many are skeptical of this option, calling it too ambitious. Our forces would lose naval superiority and potentially air cover as well. This plan relies entirely on land supply lines which are extremely vulnerable and carries the risk of being flanked by the Empire’s Northern Army.

Option B: Southward Liberation (The Peninsula Campaign)
This is considered the more logical option because geographically we won't lose naval or air support. If successful, it will completely wipe out the enemy presence on the eastern coast. This would serve as a solid staging ground for the next phase and begin to disrupt the Empire's dominance over the Crescent Strait.

Now, how do you process this? Will you support the ambitious Inland Strike or the more cautious faction? Or perhaps you have a plan of your own?

Additional Intel:

  • Q: What is the Empire’s general status?
A: They are facing a severe oil crisis due to our naval blockade.
  • Q: What about the Northern Army?
A: Their campaign has stalled due to past weather conditions and fuel shortages. The situation worsened when their Navy failed to secure the oil sources needed for their mobilization.
  • Q: Why not just land from the West and strike the Empire directly?
A: Nuts! There is nothing there to exploit as a foothold, and the sea conditions are completely unsuitable for an amphibious operation.
  • Q: Are we the "good guys" or the "bad guys"?
    A: We are soldiers.
P.S: I forgot to colored that islands near the beachhead.

A few things I'd like to know more...

1) What are the political situation in the remaining countries?
2) Condition of the army of both my enemy and of my own?

1. In Zelparia itself, resistance organizations still exist even though they have been occupied for ten years. In Tuaria itself, there is an organization called the TSA (Tuaria Security Association). This consists of the countries of Northern Tuaria, led by the Unified States of Arken. Their motivation for war began when Southern Tuaria invaded the North, and it was all the result of incitement from the empire, with the aim of weakening the countries of Northern Tuaria so they could invade the continent of Dahria without much thought, to secure their oil resources.

2. The moral of our army is high, Our Marines, who had fought for five years on numerous islands scattered across the Colossean Ocean, refused to be sent home. Many personally wrote letters to the president, saying, "Dear President,
Our Job Ain't Done Yet, Cocksucker!"
This attitude spread throughout the military.

Enemy moral according to Intel is still mixed, enemy propaganda is still massive.

Well, considering this and the options I was given (A & B), a prudent commander would choose B. Then, I'd also send support to the resistance movements behind enemy lines to wreak havoc against the enemy forces. Once I'm sure that the Empire is already weakened further, only then would I strike at the heart.

Points I considered for my answer:

1) I'm on the defending side, benefitting from biding my time against a reeling enemy who just got ass-kicked in their attempted landing. My reason for not following immediately is because they only failed once. If I bring down my guard because of that failed operation, I'm risking my armies should the empire stand their ground...and they will.

2) Using the resistance movements will benefit me through attrition by shaving off enemy forces, while I slowly surround/cut off the Imperial forces by choosing Option B. Less casualty on my side, more deaths and destruction on the enemy side coz of guerilla warfare.

Now, if I may raise a few points...

The options you gave us, Option A and B, looked a bit 'manipulated.' It's as if you really want us to pick Option B, and yes, any prudent commander will pick it because it has the less risk between the two. The only benefit of Option A is that it's an ambitious, bold operation that will net the commander glory and fame.

could the particular locations of the various occupied nations be made clearer? or are they the various white outlines on the map?

on just a basic answer, lacking further information and detail:

detach Marine forces to clear all the small islands between the coast and the blockade. secures supply lines. canvas prisoners taken in the operations for those from occupied countries who may be willing to fight to free them. have thorough reconnaissance conducted on the near sectors of the inland region to determine the best natural chokepoint(s). if there are appropriate points within a reasonable distance, detach forces to fortify a defence line as a bulwark while shipping in more troops and resources where possible. if no natural chokepoints, determine the most favourable terrain for defence then fortify in depth. Once the line is secure, begin building up forces to liberate the southern regions, including volunteers and former prisoners from the occupied countries formed into their own Free Forces (ala the Free French).

at the same time, have intelligence organizations and special operations units conduct shadow operations in occupied countries to determine the usefulness and trustworthiness of resistance organizations. where supplies can be spared, carefully supply those most capable, especially in the southern regions, with small arms, explosives and other useful items along with volunteer trainers to improve their skills. investigate and potentially do the same for those tying down the Northern Army in the North.

have the govt make overtures to the TSA diplomatically. see if there are things we can supply to them to help or they can supply to use to help. work on seeing if TSA actions can be timed to benefit operations on Zelparia and vice versa. if pressure on multiple fronts can be sustained, the ability of the Empire to shuffle troops between theatres will be curtailed.

QUESTION: Where precisely is the remaining Empire Navy homeported? they need somewhere to refuel, resupply and rest between patrols.

Baiklah, izinkan saya menyampaikan beberapa poin...

To be fair, I will expand on this so it doesn't seem like I am rigging the vote for Option B. Option A is on the table because of the cold hard fact that this war has been dragging on for a full decade. Many factions within the high command want a quick resolution by landing one single decisive strike blow.
If we choose Option B and settle for a waiting game, it effectively prolongs the war itself. Furthermore, intelligence reports indicate that the Empire has begun utilizing synthetic oil to keep their forces mobilized. Many experts are terrified by this development. Even if the quality of the fuel is questionable compared to natural oil, it still raises the very real concern that the war will drag on indefinitely.
And let us not assume that the Empire will just sit idly by and wait for their end. There is a high probability they will redeploy several veteran units from the north to join in a massive counter-attack against our current positions.

Uh, I'm a Filipino, and I can't understand this. Also, English please in this forum.

Using resistance movements can also cause distractions and slow the enemy from reconsolidating, thus giving us time to cut off their forces, and strengthen our own.

Prolonging a war isn't much an issue as long as the commander knows his goal (in my case as the defense is to kick out the enemy), and the morale of my army is high. I think we have a real world equivalent of this, but I'll comment no further as this might spark an endless argument.

So wait if its late WW2 that means strategic bombers such as the B-17 and B-29 are available so theoretically could we just bomb the hell out of them and force them to surrender.

Or.

If its near August of 1945 that means we have the nuclear option. We could force a surrender through hitting key targets to demoralize and effectively cripple them.

Alright, then. Anyway, can I copy all of your replies? I mean, from the beginning I want to use this as brainstorming and research, so I'll save all of your valuable observations, so that I can review again and will be used in my story.

Btw, you know the 'Hammer and Anvil' tactic?

If I understood it right, it's a tactic where you use a slow-moving, or static, force to delay, or contain an enemy (the anvil), while getting a fast, maneuverable force to destroy it (hammer). Likewise, using guerrilla/resistance forces to delay, distract and/or contain the Imperials here (anvil) then I go cutting off logistics, supply lines and reinforcements before striking the enemy dead (hammer).

In this type of island map, such movement is amplified coz of natural chokepoints. However, this also presented a logistics nightmare to my side for same reason the enemy is powerful (control of naval lanes). But, since I'm defending, I benefit from the innate knowledge of the area, and inner defensive lines.

A similar battle in history can be compared: the 1942 Battle of Bataan where an inferior USAFFE delayed the Japanese Imperials for nearly four months because the American-Filipino forces defending Bataan have innate knowledge of the area, and Bataan province is a small peninsula, thus got lots of natural chokepoints.

War Plan Orange 3 called for USAFFE delaying action against the Japanese (anvil) that was estimated to last for 6 months until the US Army and US Pacific Fleet can reinforce the Philippines (then a US Commonwealth Republic) (the hammer).

Sadly, Pearl Harbor happened, and the US got commitments that prioritized Europe over Asia. Hence, the 1942 Battle of Bataan.

Thanks, this material about the resistance really made me realize just how influential they are. I might actually have to nerf them. For example, by making the people in the inland regions xenophobic toward outsiders.
