Didn't even consider this, and it may not apply to this particular situation since I'm not super familiar with copyright law, but can they even legally charge for fanfiction? Technically you're making money off of someone else's product, which is most likely trademarked.
Just thinking if you commission them to write something and you like the character they created and write you own story using that character, who owns it?

I have never done so for fanfiction, but I know a bit about how this can be handled for original works.
On freelance platforms such as reedsy, fiverr, upwork, and scripted, you sign all requested rights over to the buyer.
For example, on fiverr this could be as little as non-commercial usage right and as much as complex copyright assignment contracts. Oftentimes you get paid only after the assignment is executed.
If you only write a little (not a whole book, one part of an anthology), it is usually classified as work made for hire, and, not a lawyer in any country, only needs a statement that you were hired.

I've been in this situation and I just always ask for permission to use a character, get it from the owner of the character, and write the story - and provide credit to the character's owner.

For trademarked and copyrighted characters, I'm allowed to write the story; I just can't profit from it. So, if someone paid me a story for a My Little Pony fan-fic, which I've done before, I can be paid for writing it; I just can't turn around and sell the work somehow. This is why fan-fiction is such a grey area. In a perfect world, anyone writing any fan-fiction should technically be giving credit, or asking the creator of the fiction for their blessing.

My Little Pony...? Now I gotta ask what that was about. I imagine it wasn't as child friendly as the original...

Actually, it's quite adorable. Fluttershy is tired of her bothersome life as a pony and longs to become an anime-star, and a witch is willing to help her, but for a price. It's a loony, crazy, laugh-out-loud ripoff of "The Little Mermaid" in spots. ? ?

Taking money for fanfictions that are still under copyright is very much illegal, its only when they are opened to the public domain(after copyright times have expired) that it becomes legal. This is why some writing platfoms wont let you moneytise FF's, its also againsts the ToS for places like patreon but they are very unlikely to do anything because it would hurt their profit for somthing that is unlikely to ever get chased up on.

J: In the interests of getting an income, we're now looking for commissions for stories.

Feral Catgirl Colony Productions
Now Open for Commissioned Stories!

Pricing Information

- Basic Rate: 25$ per 1000 words

- Fight Scene Rate: +$15 per 1000 words; only applies to the fight scene itself.

-Sexual Content: +15$ per 1000 words.

-Detailed Sex Scenes: +40$ per 1000 words; this stacks with the modifier for general sexual content.

Fetish Price Modifier (stacks w/sexual content):
- Furries: Free!

- Bondage: +10$ per 1000 words.

- Other Fetishes: +15$ per fetish per 1000 words.

- Body Modularity/Dullahan: +25$ per 1000 words (we actually like it, but a constant boner makes writing difficult)

Setting Price Modifier:
- No Setting Specified: +0$

- Adleyverse: A 1950s-ish urban fantasy with no masquerade. Much more inclusive of assorted minorities than the actual 1950s. Our own IP. +0$

- Voidskipper: A science-fiction setting 8000 years in the future with rampant transhumanism and megastructures all over. Significant attention is paid to scientific accuracy. Our own IP. +0$

- Familiar Fandoms (Worm, Mega Man, Familiar of Zero, Cultist Simulator, Slay The Princess, Outer Wilds, Mass Effect, Star Wars, Halo, possibly others): +10$ per 1000 words.

- Fandoms we don't know well: Before allowing commissions, we want 100$ to fund detailed study of the setting in question.

- Fandoms We Don't Like: NO

- Custom Setting: Variable; subject to negotiation.

Editorial Modifiers:
- Additional Editing Passes: +0.5* price multiplier for each editing pass beyond the first.

- Private Story: *3 final price, after all other modifiers

Terms
- No generative AI is used in the writing of our stories; integrity aside, it's plainly shit at keeping track of characters and plot threads.

- Desired story length must be specified as part of the commission, maximum length of a single commission is 10000 words.

- A 25% down-payment is required to start work on a commission.

- The down payment will be refunded in full if the story is not complete within 30 days of commissioning.

- Payment is accepted by Cashapp, Paypal, and Ko-Fi.

- Unless you pay extra for the commissioned story to be kept private, it will be posted publicly upon completion. We want the publicity from people reading our stories.

Things We Won't Write
- We will not write anything portraying bigotry positively.

- We will not write anything portraying billionaires positively.

- We will not write anything portraying landlordry positively.

- We will not write anything portraying narcissists positively.

- We will not write anything portraying authoritarianism positively.

- We will not write snuff fiction.

- We will not write any story with both sexual content and underage characters. Not even if the two never meet; they can't be in the same story.

- We will not write any story with non-consensual sexual content. Mind-control and/or drugs do not count as consent. One party having authority or leverage over the other also muddies consent enough that we won't write it.
with prices like this, this is why people use AI for writing.

I didn't know EA was branching off into writing... are they gonna cut the 1K words in half and make us pay extra for the rest, calling it DLC?
naw you pay for 1/3 of the book for 79.99, the next 1/3 for 89.99, and the final 1/3 gets for 129.99 three years later. Also, for some reason there is a store option at the end of every chapter to add skins, unique characters, and a gatcha for some reason. Also Dark Mode is available for a 1 year subscription of 24.99.

It will be microtransaction prose. If you want to pay for the premium prose, that's a monthly subscription. Otherwise, you will ruin yourself and the prose will become a long run-on sentence that goes on forever and ever you will have to suffer this for the whole chapters and certain words will be incorrectly making you feel so weird reading it. Or cough up dabloons, you filthy mongrel.

You know I would much prefer this than the ones that DM me asking me to add them on Discord and offering suggestions for my story.
DM? I'll give my suggestions openly. You need more futas and possibly some smut. LOL JK

id probably be reluctant to pay a person 501 dollars if i get paid 500.

That's a net loss...of a dollar.
That suit he's wearing in his profile pic isn't just for show. This person has mastered the art of the deal.

Guys, I'll write you 10k words for 60 americano buckaroo and throw in hardcore smut if you want for free.

And be done with it in a week.
Hmmm, my entire life I've been too poor to afford to pay others commissions, but if I were to ever win the lottery. I'd have you write a ton of stories: a yuri where a young adult seduces her cougar landlord, a futafic of a futa trying to find real love in a world where hedonism and pleasure are prioritized above all else, a selfcest of a character so lonely he or she develops multiple personalities just to romance himself/herself, a Romeo and Juliet-style forbidden romance between a dolphin and a shark (no smut on this one), etc.

Ah, Murphy's Law
How dare you tempt me so?!?!

H: At this point we're honestly wondering if we should even bother making a better second draft using what people have said, or if we should take the hint from all the mockery and just fuck off.

You'd definitely have better luck in a subreddit, most of the people here can write their own stories, and the ones who can't didn't really come to this site to pay for stories. But seriously, reconsider your prices... that's ridiculous.
