Just the annual thing to garner interest.

Now for my case first.

I divide my ship types into two major categories: dependence (K-1) and independence (K-2).

Independent ships (K-2) are those that can operate alone without accompanying support vessels or resupplying at a station on the way with a long operating range.

K-1 ships are those that either couldn't hold enough supply for long distance operation or burn through their ammunition too quickly. Hence, they need to move with the fleet.

Long operating range is defined as being capable of moving to make a 2-way trip to any place within its current galaxy.
Medium operating range is defined as capable of making a one-way trip to any place within the galaxy.
Short operating range (or System-bound) is used for ships that only have enough furl to move within the system.

K-2 ships

Frigate
The most common medium warships. They have standard firepower with fast speed. Their weapons are usually more effective against targets smaller than themselves.

Heavy Frigate
A subtype of Frigate that is big enough to be considered capital ships.

Cruiser
As common as Frigate. Both Frigate and Cruiser are medium-size ships. Their difference is Cruiser sacrifices speed (although they are still quite fast for their size) for staying power. They are more armoured and are retrofitted with larger cannons that are more suitable to bring down other ships.

Battlecruiser
Subtype of cruiser. Large ship with an emphasis on ship-2-ship weaponry.

Armoured Cruiser
Another subtype of cruiser. Unlike Battlecruiser, Armoured Cruiser can range from medium to large. They are mostly used to absorb firepower from stationary (or less maneuverable) platforms. They have only a few guns.

Heavy Cruiser
Big Cruiser.

Corvette
The small ships of space warfare. Every single subtype of this ship type is small. These highly maneuverable and fast ships may be retrofitted with a lot of small guns to act as fighter-destroying ships or have one large gun to engage larger vessels.

Scout
Subtype of Corvette. It has little to no weapon but has great intel-gathering capability. A few classes may exchange some of their speed or intel-gathering power for stealth or/and cloak.

Banshee
Subtype of Corvette. It was counter-intel ship. Its equipment can give false signals to enemy's scanner, radar, etc. or disrupt the radar entirely.

K-1 ships

Carrier
Ship carrying space fighters. While heavily armoured ships can shrug off fighters' attack, the same couldn't be said for the turrets or exhaust tubes on those ships. Due to dedicating most of its space to cater for its space fighters, Carrier doesn't have enough reserve to operate alone/long distance.

Battleship
Either a large or a very large ship. Slow ship. Weapons are somewhat effective for planetary bombardment and very potent for ship-2-ship combat. Heavily armoured. Has better matchup against Armoured Cruiser due to superior firepower and similar armour while Armoured Cruiser's speed and mobility are too negligible to make up. Matchup ratio against Battlecruiser is worse than between BS and AC but still has a score of 65-35 with BS having the edge. Has a hard time against Heavy Frigate since HF has strong enough gun to cause meaningful damage to BS while having enough speed to out-maneuver then open fire at vulnerable angle such as the exhaust tube of the rocket engine.

Arsenal ship
Large or very large ship. Has almost no armour. Vulnerable to any attack. Have either average to fast speed. Are stuffed full of ship-destroying or planet-bombardment weapons. Its bombardment is more effective than BS's due to its greater weaponry. Planet killers are all Arsenal ships. May exhaust all their ammunition (or energy dedicated for weapons) in a small amount of time. Requires escorts and constant supply.

Pretty much every ship in my Sci-fi is either some kind of support carrier, mecha, or unarmed civilian transport. Basically weapons suck and shielding is so advanced the only way to break through it is with space magic. Put a space wizard in a mecha and then you can get through advanced shielding ez.

Sci-fi ship sizes, hulls, mission types, ship specialization and purpose... all this allows so much creativity.

I generally split between hull types and vessel purpose.

Typical Hull Sizes:
Drone / Fighter (if they exist in your universe)
Cutter (Shuttle)
FAC (Fast Attack Craft)
Corvette
Frigate
Destroyer
Cruiser
Battlecruiser
Battleship
Dreadnought
Monitor
Battlemoon

A few types:

Fast Assault
Heavy Laser
Point Defense
Missile Boat
Industrial
Arsenal
Jump Ship
Recon
AWACS
Heavy Armor
Exploration
...you can even combine them!
Heavy Armor Exploration Cruiser!

So far there is a prison ship (the Oubliette) and a palace ship which I imagine being not unlike the pyramid ship from Stargate (the original movie). This is a great thread though. I need to put more thought into what these ships are like, outside and inside.

It was a bit... strange... to have that much hull sizes.
Are there a great difference between each size?

Good luck! :D
For me, I only use function as the guideline. Hence, a ship type will only exist if they serve certain function to the culture that built it. Hence, although I want to give more ship types, I couldn't.

for the one novel that will feature that will feature space elements, i have combat ships broken down into two broad categories: Capitals and Escorts/Subcapitals. the below specs are for the organization that the MC joins though i havent worked out the details for the fleets of the galactic societies.

Capitals: the mainline ships of the fleet. They are the core of the fleet organization and each ship leads it's own squadron of subcapital escorts. Capitals further break down into two distinct types
- Assault Carriers: These are veritable fortresses that carry smaller strike craft (both exo-atmospheric and atmospheric), troops and equipment for planetary/station warfare as well as boarding actions, Assault craft for those troops and enough supplies and basic parts to maintain itself and it's attendant fleet for a long time. There are only a handful of them in the organization's fleet though as they are just so massive that they arent easy to build. They sometimes serve as flagships during major operations.
- Strike Cruisers: These are the bulk of the capital fleet and are more geared to spaceborne warfare with heavy armor, bristling with devastating weaponry and some strike craft. They have a small contingent of marines for shipboard defence and a few have been known to carry a small unit of mechs for special operations.

Subcapitals: operate in groups as the attendants to Strike Cruisers and compose the numerical bulk of the fleet. They also break down into two types:
- Destroyers: akin to miniaturized strike cruisers, bristling with armor and weapons. they lack any strike craft or exotic equipment in favor of using the limited space for more maneuvering ability and redundant systems.
- Frigates: the lightest ships in the fleet, they trade the heavy firepower and armor of destroyers for sheer speed, maneuverability, stealth and detection capability. they usually operate as a fleet's eyes and ears in recon as well as elusive raiders that can strike from the enemies flanks or rear or at the enemy's logistics train. Uniquely among the fleet, they are the only ship that mounts various forms of torpedoes (of both lethal and technical types).

A big thing about the ships is that they are all designed and built to be completely modular (to varying levels), especially the Strike Cruisers. This aids in both ease of repair but also allows for a diversity of weapons and tactical systems.

For logistics, there are rapid transports for moving cargo and people around and engineering ships that are capable of making repairs and replacing modules.

I figured for the Organization, modularity would be a better option as it would mean that flexibility would be huge and base hulls could then be built quicker without requiring full and unchangeable fit-outs.

I had a story along time ago where I created light year long ships and I just called them the “FU Gravity Haulers”
