In this case, the funny thing about all this is that they had games in the series which already demonstrated how to do it properly.
Dragon Age 2 has all the characters be player sexual (not counting the DLC love interest) but at least two are coded not-straight in the story. While it's never explicitly stated what their preferences are, the starting quest for one of them is to rescue his male partner and the other flirts with anything with legs.
Inquisition handled trans people pretty good as well. Krem is a trans-male and when it's brought up, it's just flat out "that's how he is" and the story contined on.
Woke, or whatever, aside; Veilguard's writing was like boiled dog turds so it's just so much bad.
