As is, I use either AI generated art or things I find on the internet.

It depend what you want and how valuable dollar are in your country, but you can find some who make covers for 100$. You may even find some cheaper in pixiv.

The style I'm intersted in doesn't really go lower than 150$. Add to that about 1:4 conversion ratio, and you can imagine how ridiculously expensive this is for me. I once wanted to commision an art from an artist I liked, then reconsidered when I saw their lowest price was set at 200$.

Pixiv is a possibility, but it gets troublesome when I want a cover depicting a specific character.

I don't know how to describe this style, but it doesn't look like something worth 200$ for me (my opinion on it), maybe like said previously, you can take a look on pixiv or even fiverr if you really want a human made cover.

It's not that I want a human made cover, but AI-generated art is generally very lacking in details, especially if I want some specific details. Human made art is always better when it comes to making precisely what you want.

Guess I'll check those out, thanks. They'll definitely be better than whatever I can scrape up with an AI by myself.

It's true that if you want detailed cover, AI are not good enough for it. I comisioned this artist https://www.artstation.com/wolfjaws , if you wanna check his work, through I don't think the art style suit what you looking for, but if that interest you, his price are around 100$ depending on what you want, you can also ask for modification when the work are in progress.

For webnoveling, I use AI. It's a matter of competition more than anything.

If you put 0 money in on the project, it used to be that there would be no art. Now, all free novels have cover art. To compete you need a cover.

I intend to hire an artist if I do a rewrite and publish a full novel. AI art is not great at consistency between scenes etc, relegating it to one off covers.

I think AI is a useful tool for artists to use, and I know artists who use AI to help draft out ideas or fill in parts of their art.
I personally commission artists for my covers for published projects, but AI was used to fill in missing pieces when creating the final piece.

I had some artist drawn covers a while ago but unfortunately I don't know any artists personally who have encountered my works to the point that I feel like they understand the style and feeling that I'm going for. I would love to work with an artist who read my stuff and got inspired. I have a couple friends who do more low-key stuff. What I like about creating my own covers as I can take stock images where necessary and do really fun and quirky things with them learning the techniques of Photoshop to make interesting cover imagery. The addition of AI introduces new possibilities for editing together imagery into something that feels fascinating and approaching transformative. The details of AI stuff are hard to delineate right now and I mostly use them to create glossary character references so that I can remember what a character looks like and all their details as much as possible and the readers can be helped out in that respect as well.

I’m actually not great at drawing humans in detail yet, but any non-human things I can do pretty well at.
