Unlike some people believe there isn't a diversity quota you need to hit.

A character should be designed around what you think is best for the story, not to check off boxes.

In short, I don't think it matters.
I agree completely, but I was just wondering if it would satisfy ye angry mob

I don't know if you count as disabled if you become mute rather than be born mute
Disabilities have nothing to do whether it was born or something that happened later on. As long as it limits or straight up makes impossible to normally function in the society that would count as disability.

Listen I don't want to bring up unpleasant examples, but I'm pretty sure that if someone ends up paralyzed waist down in an accident, they very much count as disabled. If being mute from births counts as being disabled, then being mute from later on does as well. The state of the person matters, not their past; a person who got both their legs broken and has them in casts should also count as disabled, if only temporarily.

I'm not sure what it has to do with diversity though? Even if a character like that did not count as disabled, they would spice up your cast in terms of diversity anyway.

Having a mute character who wasn't born mute but had his tongue cut out is technically having a disabled character, right?
yes.

It counts. The individual can no longer talk, having literally had the individual disable him. The verb is apt during this circumstance, so therefore does the adjective. This time though, it is by something other than the luck of the genetic lottery.

After experimenting, you can in fact talk without your tongue. It just sounds weird because the tongue is used for enunciation.

Crush the vocal chords.
