Basically our kids are being taught stupid shit while other countries are teaching them practical defense techniques.
Either way though, the education system of the soviets shows one thing, it doesn't matter how good the 'government education is.' Society will crumble if people don't have the right values and incentives.

Shitty manufacturing and the embezzling of material costs will render all those “practical defense techniques” moot. No amount of training you give someone or how good of a design you steal can fix that, especially if your training is debatably effective. The Ukrainians are in war so training makes sense.

USSR crumbled because there were internal problems that the top felt couldn't be addressed with their current state of affairs. Therefore they began democratization and a presidency. To say it has nothing to do with the people is wrong, but you are right in saying it was a decision by Gorbachev.

Saying it's just a top thing is disingenuous and oversimplifying everything.

The common people do not have power in politics, or any form of reality. They are far too disparate and disorganized. Oligarchies exist, formally and informally and some will contribute more to a cause in a single moment, than millions will ever in their entire life of mundanity.
