When the genre is “harem” and MC has that decisive epilogue moment when he is “encouraged” by the author to choose from one of the love interests. And, the guy is quick to choose his future wife during the last chapter, even though he was pretty neutral toward all the characters till that point.

Or, he chooses all of them because he can't decide...

Have you ever read “The Devil Is A Part-Timer”?
I’ve had the ending of the LN spoiled for me, and what I found out absolutely killed any interest I had for the series.
What happened there is what I consider a textbook bad ending.
The author just wanted to get the series over with, the outcome was unsatisfying, and the main heroine got shafted for… reasons (?) that I still don’t quite understand. (Also, for some reason the series turns into political intrigue for a significant length. I haven’t found out where, but apparently that happens.)

Bad as in bad for the character, is just them dying.
The worst ending or one that has filled me with the most sense of frustration is when a book was dragging on but I kept reading because I wanted a mystery of the world answered, I got the reveal, it was barely better than saying it was all a dream.
Anything that makes the revaluate whether the book was worth reading

Yes, I followed the whole series to the very end. I was happy to see the new anime season for this too. At first, it was kind of vaguely leaning toward a typical harem ending with characters coming to an understanding with each other, but suddenly that ending happened. It's more like a rushed ending than a bad ending, though.

How about choosing them all because he's decided?
When it's because he's a spineless, indecisive mf, then yes, it's a bad ending in my books, but if he's decided, then he's a—

What do you consider to be a bad ending?
>it was all a dream all along. It was all in le head.
>nothing ever matters get fucked stay miserable you fucking failed and now you're dying everyone is dead
>get cucked with zero buildup I love """""subverting expectations"""""
>worst girl wins I fucking hate The World God Only Knows Chihiro is the worst fucking girl in the entire series and she's the one the MC picked fuck you Tamiki Wakaki
>my editor/publisher is axing my project so I'm rushing everything too bad about all those plot points that are unresolved
>everyone forgets about the MC and doesn't remember his struggles fuck you Jee Gaeb Song you fucking hack and your fucking abusive menhera tomboy fetish

I honestly loved this series but yeah kinda same. I was planning on reading the light novels until I got spoiled.

Fantasy Story: All MC's struggles, and achievements are all futile. All his friends and lover died when they battle against the Demon King, he died with despair and accomplished nothing. There's no resurrection, he just straight up died and ended the series.

Romance Story: The MC got NTR'd

Slice of Life Story: The friends became enemies.

Mecha Story: The MC died while there's a disaster happening.

  1. The story finally ends but the brain damage plot extended the story five thousand dog farts longer than it had to be, now the story is dying of ligma
  2. Time skip with under-resolved relationship status
  3. Flawed main character solves the conflict that is only solvable after fixing those flaws, but the author does something else
  4. Hiatus/Discontinued (Author's Bad End)
Wait, waaait, wait! Is my story then already had a bad ending?! He already has three wives! :sweating_profusely:
No, harem ending isn't always bad ending.
100 Girlfriends becomes more based each time a new girlfriend is added.

The ending of the fanfic I'm writing at the moment could be seen as “bad”.

If nothing changes, it will end with the MC opening his eyes and smiling. Of course, I'm going to resolve all the plot points before then and make an Epilogue, but that ending might annoy some people.

For me, it can be a lot of things. Generally, I would say a bad ending is one that leaves things unanswered and/or leaves the readers unsatisfied, but it's not that simple, because that's what a subjectively bad ending is. However, in some cases, those endings can be really good from another standpoint.

The ending of my own story actually qualifies there. I've had quite a lot of people complain that it felt rushed and incomplete, yet, it was intended - so the ending achieved exactly what I wanted it to achieve. That, arguably, is good as well.

An ending that makes no sense given the previous plot and character actions, or is just nonsensical by the book's logic

You mean "Nisekoi"? That's exactly what happened. Ah! I hate it.
