So in a couple of my novels, I add some lewd scenes (solo & partner), but it's not the primary focus. Like, my lewd scenes to chapters ratio is like 1:10. Maybe 1:6 at most. But I feel like I shouldn't really tick the "Smut" tag because 1.) not many lewd scenes and not the focus. Just a bonus and 2.) they're not good xd So I feel that by ticking the Smut tag, I'm baiting readers or something like that.

To sum things up best I can;

Baby Level: Mature - you got your violence, trauma/dark themes, non explicit sexual themes, gore. My first thought - dragon age games.

Advanced Level: Adult - content only suited for adults because it can include graphic violence/gore, explicit sex or very dark. Think Game of Thrones.

Oh Dear God Level: Smut - doesn't really need explaining. its heavily fucko bingo. So, like 50 shades of gray.

And for example, my story has the mature tag for now but when it gets to a certain point that's even more mature, I'll upgrade it to the adult tag. I could preemptively add it now, but it'd be misleading. It's better to upgrade at the right time to get the right audience.

Definition:
Contains subject matter which may be too extreme for a younger audience. Content that deals with mature themes such as gore, sex, or violence.
Definition:
Contains mature content that is suitable only for adults. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.
Definition:
Erotic work of fiction thatโ€™s mainly targeted toward females. Smut stories often gives heavy focus on love and relationships between the main characters.

TLDR: Mature is for Teen+, Adult is Adult+, Smut is what used to be called "Romance".

If we're talking about in terms of sexuality, it's about the amount of description it has after it gets into the theme.

Adult would be like forbidden relationships, cheating, and some other weird crap or fetish but not descriptive.
Mature would give a modest description, such as the kissing, the touching.
Smut is just plain out describing how big something is and how it goes inside etc... like the full description.

I apparently didn't actually read your post before replying. The point of genres and tags isn't just to draw in readers who want to read those tags, it's to be a filter to keep readers who don't want to read it away. So by not identifying your story this way, you're more likely to draw in people who will 1 star or even review bomb you for 'surprise smut'.

Going by the links you posted, 'Adult' seems to be more accurate, as the scenes are rare.

Certain people will be offended by ANY sexual content, so if you have a scene, good or not, that describes naked sex organs, or their interactions, it's safer just to tag it with mature.

If I am reading space mecha milfic, I don't want the writer talking about boobie sex without a warning.

Mature genre = can talk about themes that genres that are not mature shouldn't talk about (Example: A person talking about how they were raped and/or tortured, a character talking about self harm, etc.).
Adult genre = goes out of its way to show mature themes (Example: A depiction of a sex scene during a honeymoon, a person actually harming themselves, or an actual torture scene). All adult stories are mature, but not all mature stories are graphic enough to need the adult tag.
Smut genre = stories that have a focus on erotica (graphic depictions of sex) (Example: two people explicitly and in detail having sex, more than two people having sex, or a graphic depiction of masturbation). All of these stories are adult stories, but not all adult stories have erotica as a focus.

From your description on top, it sounds like you need the mature and adult genre but maybe don't need the smut genre (even though 1:10 is pretty often, it would depend on how graphic the scenes are). That being said, it should definitely still have the sexual content warning.

After writing my examples I realized your examples are better lol. 10/10

There is no romance in some of these smut stories. Too many awful "systems" that allow MCs to mind control/force partners into sexual encounters. That being said, I wish there were more romance around.

Correct. I generally avoid "fanfiction," "boys love," "xinxia," "wuxia," "cultivation," "rape," all three NTR tags, etc., and proper tagging ensures that I don't run into those stories.

The rarity of the scenes shouldn't be the deciding factor (besides, I don't think 1:10 is rare at all; sex appears pretty commonly in his story); the main deciding factor should be how graphic the scenes are written.

Certain people will be offended by ANY sexual content, so if you have a scene, good or not, that describes naked sex organs, or their interactions, it's safer just to tag it with mature.

You are 100% correct. BTW, not only are tags important, but content warnings are too.

But if the description is on the BOTTOM does that change things?

Right but if you tag a story that is mostly not about sex as smut you're going to disgruntle readers who were expecting the story to be mainly about sex.

Happened to me once. I was reading a story about a guy who was turned into a (futa) dragon on this site. Despite tons of teasing lewd stuff, I was over a hundred chapters in, and there was still no erotica. In a comment, I brought it up: "You're not doing the smut tag justice," and the author decided not to add erotic scenes but rather to remove the genre/tag to better suit the direction he wanted the story to take in the future.

I actually kept reading the story because I didn't mind that the author had changed his mind about smut. However, later he would retcon/redux two characters' relationship, and when authors start hitting the reset button to reuse plotlines multiple times, I lose interest.

I was actually curious about this too, for when those scenes do (inevitably) come up in my own works.
I have several such scenes planned for Aethara, but they aren't the focus by any means, so I was wondering how to update the genre when it does reach that point.
From what the answers here seem to indicate; Adult will be necessary for me as well; but Smut won't be.

I was looking for the sites genre definitions. Thanks for sharing how to find them, I missed this when posting my story. Time to take the smut tag off since I misinterpreted it and did not realize it was a relabeling of Romance. It directly conflicts with the Seinen genre, which is more fitting.

I don't understand resets. Especially around things like sexuality.

Why not just... I don't know....write a new story?

All I know is "Mature" is what I try to write but I am not, so I tend to write "Adult" ... and generally get annoyed by smut unless its wrapped in comedy or a "waystation" to the true story.

Wait... Just want some clarification. Let's say I'm writing a fantasy novel, but it had a few scenes here and there, quite descriptive. However, the story doesn't revolve around it. Does that count as smut? Or just adult? Probably like 4 out of a 100 chapters. But the sex scene was kind of an integral part of character development.

Tbh, it sounds like "adult" and "mature" to me. Just make sure to also include the "sexual content" warning.

Hopefully that's "Adult" and "Mature" as it describes both one I had to take down for Pocket FM (Between Worlds) and one still here (Strange Awakening).
