Congratulations.
Now write 69420 words. ??
Will do! My target is 400k! (I want the longest Hetalia Bulgaria fic to be a Bultine fic! He is shipped with Romania, but I think that the Hetalia Bulgaria x Hetalia Byzantine Empire ship is better, more of a push and pull dynamic if I have to be honest. It will probably not be the longest fic on AO3 because there is this Chinese Russia x China fic which is 2.5M words long, but I will write that ending!)
...
I googled the number you wrote...

Make your target 420k, even if it means you add 20k "really" in the last 10 chapters. This definitely will not annoy any of your existing readerbase (source: trust me).

I've actually reached around double that number in the space of about 3 weeks, and that's for a story I have going in it's pre-writing phase.

I might very well be able to set this one up for a 5/week release rate once I finally start dropping the chapters publicly. The kind of grind one goes through in order to make a series really land with a splash.

Guess I'll have to be taking a good look at my outlining.

?

Why have a target word count? Why not write the story and leave it at the word count the "story" demands?
It helps me stick to the project. I will probably not reach the goal, or write more than needed, but it is good to have it. =)

There are times when an author gets carried away by the story/chapter he/she writes. Having a target word count helps in minimizing such incidents, and divides the work nicely into several 'easy-to-digest' parts.

Like, for me, my target word count for each of my main chapters is around 4k to 4.5k words.

Any excess on that would be used in the next chapters.

Another example is my work around Volume 13 and 14. The original is, Volume 13 ended to have about 113k words, which is long for a light novel format.

So, as my limit is around 60k - 80k word count, I divided Volume 13 to two, the latter half became Volume 14 with a few additional chapters.

That doesn't say that an author should focus solely on the word count and leave the story demands. There should always be a balance.
