The Reason You Don't Have Readers: No, It Isn't How Well You Write

We have authors from all over the world. What if the author's first language is something other than English?

Editing One Long Series, or Several Shorter Ones?

    I write several short series. I can't fathom writing a single 150-chapter epic. ?

Favorite kinds of scenes to write? Vs. the ones you hate?

I don't like writing sex scenes. They strike me as mechanical. They don't interest me. There's more to love than just sex. There's intimacy. There's hugging and kissing. There's sitting in bed talking.

Writing [Rant] Don't Insult your Readers.

I've used it (mostly as a tipoff that something isn't right about the situation ... that all is NOT as it seems). You gravely overestimate adult readers. The world sucks right now. Most adults have to work 60-90 hours a week at jobs that don't pay nearly enough to be self-supporting. They...

Why a Story Needs a Primary Antagonist (and how to find them)

It was the best I could remember (I last studied the thing in high school -- a million years ago :blobrofl: ). To me, it's much more interesting than a stock mustache-twirling "bad guy". There are also anti-heroes (Death Wish, Falling Down, American Psycho).

Why a Story Needs a Primary Antagonist (and how to find them)

A story doesn't necessarily need an antagonist (Look at Hamlet. He spends most of the play fighting against himself and his one flaw -- his inability to make up his mind). Or what about MacBeth? He's undone by his lust for power. It consumes everyone around him. Inserting an antagonist just...

How do you pick or choose the names of your characters and cities in your book

My MC is from the Middle East. I needed something that was relatively easy for the typical reader to pronounce, so I went with Aaliyah (most people know the name from the late singer Aaliyah). You first have to define your characters. Where did they grow up? What were their families like...

Sell me on your MC, not your story

My MC is a time-traveling twenty-three-hundred-year-old who wants nothing more than to raise her her half human, half son. She's acquired a great deal of wisdom over the course of twenty-three hundred years. How do her experiences across the centuries impact her? My stories are character...

    Help W/ character names

Humor Writing the trench warfare of writing.

There's a rule in comedy known as "The Rule of Three." Three jokes in a given scene ... and then move on. There's nothing to be gained by dragging something out. Pro Tip: Don't force the humor. Unless you're Mel Brooks and rapid-fire humor is your brand, let the humor emerge organically.

How many of you take writing seriously? (Poll)

Becoming exceptional is a fairly lofty goal. I'm just happy to write and put words on a page.

Write another story. I write short stories. A lot of my stories are only one chapter.

    Sci-fi compared to Fantasy?

***cough*** light sabres ***cough*** A.K.A. the "Let's have Celia Gooding sing!" ep. :blob_facepalm: I thought Buffy and Xena handled their musical eps better (when THEY did it, they just jumped right in without trying to hazard an explanation). Or Masters of the Universe (the...

What's the personal ethic code for your stories like?

I don't like writing sex scenes. They bore me. It's all rather mechanical. There's more to love than just sex (There's intimacy. There's lying in bed talking. There's hugging and kissing and cuddling.)

Review my story! I am trying to create a unique story.

I write contemporary fantasy. I don't feel the need to go into a ton of detail. There's something to be said for leaving things to the reader's imagination.

Review my story! I am trying to create a unique story.

Don't beat yourself up over it. Not everyone is going to get you. There's nothing wrong with that. I don't believe in going into extensive detail over the furniture (it slows down the plot).
