The way I see backstories is that they’re the context for MC’s behavior, particularly their beliefs and their fears if they aren’t hero’s journey esque blank slates with a happy life. In the latter case, the rest of the story is about how they form the beliefs that define them.

I lost a lot of interest and eventually dropped death commando partially because of the latter. It marked the turning point where the story began feeling like a power fantasy. No hate to the author, and they still seemed to be doing decently with the story beyond that, just not my thing
