Is there a way to prevent readers from giving bad ratings without a clear reason?

I usually prefer the 'mystery men' explanation. The Shoveler: "Billionaire Lance Hunt Wears glasses. Captain Amazing doesn't wear glasses!" Mister Furious: "Obviously, he takes them off when he transforms." The Shoveler: "That doesn't make any sense. He wouldn't be able to SEE!"

Writing Making MAGIC 2 - Writing Magical Battles

The worst one. The one where there's a group of kids in the background around a table, and one kid in the foreground holding the basic D&D set and saying "I don't need them, I have dungeons and Dragons." The very concept showed that whoever wrote that stupid ad had no friggin' clue whatsoever...

Is there a way to prevent readers from giving bad ratings without a clear reason?

NOTHING is anonymous anymore. even the stuff you think helps make you anonymous, like VPNs, constant cache clearing, and anti-spyware just changes your trail slightly, it doesn't make it disappear. That's why I poke fun at 'secret identities' in my books.

Writing Making MAGIC 2 - Writing Magical Battles

Hah, you think that was bad... you should see how they treated China and Japan. whew. Hong Kong by night almost gave me nightmares, and not the fun kind I'd write horror stories about. I was actually thinking about writing it myself, based on some of the discussions in your thread. I freely...

    Good setup for litrpg?

You want it to take off? Write it as the protagonist has a DIFFERENT system from the majority of the world. Something that's unique. That way the original system could be humdrum ordinary, and you could spill out your irritation as an author with tried-and-true systems into your work. It could...

Writing Making MAGIC 2 - Writing Magical Battles

*Runs his finger around his collar uncomfortably and then fans his face* Umm... Thank you? You know I am married, right? :geek: Honestly, though, you have some great tips in here... and I am sort of wondering why you don't have books in your sig. I am a voracious reader, and kind of interested...

Writing Making MAGIC 2 - Writing Magical Battles

Right? If you like the character, it's like it grabs your hands and starts writing for you.... you are just stuck with the damned carpal tunnel. Hardest parts of my books are where the character paints themselves into a corner and I have to puzzle out some way to get them out of it cause they...

    Magic systems?

I mostly prefer setting up a series of limitations for each magic system... and then proceed to give the Protagonist ways to violate those limitations. That seems to make readers happiest. You don't have to even make him or her particularly OP, readers just love folks that find exploits.

    The Truth About Reviews

Honestly, most reviews on webfiction are either rants (good or bad) that have nothing to offer, or are some poor basement dweller's attempt to make himself (or herself) look sharp at your expense, and are packed with buzzwords and irrelevant nonsense like 'Plot Armor' and 'rhetoric vs...

Writing Making MAGIC 2 - Writing Magical Battles

Heh I like to think of writing like I am the DM, and all the players are tied to chairs and gagged so they HAVE to follow my storylines! Mauahah, the desperate looks in their eyes as I make their characters actually behave the way their classes, the world, and their proposed character...

Jay's Synopsis Formula will work on your novel.

This is a decent set of starting rules. I suggest people learn them, that way when you set out to subvert them, you will know what you are doing (rubs hands together gleefully)

Where's the line between magic and superpowers?

There is no line. Superpowers are literally magic that has a pseudo-scientific explanation of some kind, so parents don't beat their kids for reading about satanic spells when they pick up a Superman comic.

Writing Making MAGIC 2 - Writing Magical Battles

Ackshually, I am trying to be that irritating guy that finds any excuse whatsoever to talk about their military and gaming experience—kind of like vegans, paleos, basement alphas, born-again atheists, pride activists, tinfoil hatters, flat earthers, greens, preachers, dwight shrutes, fact...

Writing Making MAGIC 2 - Writing Magical Battles

I have a different viewpoint, but then again, I spent 15 years in the military, am a huge fan of history, and have been running tabletop RPG games with my wife and playing stuff like Warhammer and battletech for over 30 years. Epic war magics, once you know what forms your world's magic can...

Writing Making MAGIC 2 - Writing Magical Battles

There's also kind of a tremendous difference between 'magical battles' and 'battles that have magic'. Dragonball-z style fights with enormously long descriptions of power-ups and psychological build-ups are a great way to get people to skim and fast-forward to the good parts. But giant...

    A quick question about romance

I think that the power dynamic is hugely important to how the story progresses. Is it a typical dominant-male, submissive-female bodice ripper type? That formula is very well known. They meet, have a decent romance scene for whatever reason early or halfway through because he impresses her, and...

Powerscaling: Tell me about the most powerful character in all your novel/s

Right now, I am working on a new story. 8 chapters (40k words, 80 pages) in, called 'Ain't no rest for the shifted'. It's an isekai, but a weird one, where the protagonist had a full and rewarding life but reincarnated as a spirit beast. His 'start' was when he became powerful enough to gain a...
