I never said that. I said that treating a system in the same way as the laws of physics makes the system more believeable. Because the point is, your writing your story as if this "system" does exist, even though it obviously doesn't.

I think the key is in the build up. The actual conflict scene itself can be pretty short, but the start of the conflict shouldn't happen until all the pieces of the puzzle have been put in place. What are those "puzzle pieces"? Sadly, I don't know. It depends on the story and scene, I guess...
