It's probably the graphing software just filling out the y scale because it needs something to put there. There probably isn't a field in the graphing frontend library or it's being ignored where you say that values will all be whole numbers so the scale should be too.

As I see it, movies have a ton of subtle visual cues and techniques they can make use of rather than internal monologue, so they tend not to go with it sometimes. Monologues are a limitation of our medium, but they can be really fun to read and write, and isn't that the point in the end?
