I'm personally a fan of brute force after strategy. Use planning to understand, simplify, and do away with the bulk of the problem, but then use brute force for whatever is left or if the plan went wrong somewhere. That's what I did for my first book!

Remembering people? I literally set aside a section of my google doc to list people, their personality points, and how they interact with the main character. But yeah, I'm going to recommend what others are saying as well; use a cheat sheet! Take notes! And maybe try to keep them neat?
