    What did you learn today?

Kind of related(in the sense of weird shit that was consumed in food, drink or medicine)- I watched a program on food in Victorian England, and one of the things they did was add borax powder to milk as it masked the sour flavor from spoiling. Milk was primarily for children. Unfortunately, it...

Lessons on Theme That Actually Matter

Thanks for this. I am starting an outline on a story I want to try and it was feeling slow. This will help. Gives me more to focus on to flesh out the outline.

Trying to be less of a pant-ser

Have any of you tried the snowflake method? Any thoughts about it? Write now I have a couple different templates for different outlines that I am working on building the framework up from. I am hoping by using multiple styles it will force me to explore and expand the details a bit more. First...

Trying to be less of a pant-ser

Most of my writing is short stories- I go in with a simple idea and that's it. Works okay most of the time. But for longer stories I struggle to create a coherent flow as I have an idea, and a few scenes that I want/need to occur, but the rest is badly connected with awful flow that I spend as...

How to overcome procrastination, and why "just do it" is absolutely NOT the solution.

People who talk about 'beating depression' I suspect never had the really deep, pernicious kind. You don't beat it, you strangle that fucker til it's unconscious and toss it back down into the basement and relock the door. Then you get a reprieve until it wakes up and chews its way out. Could...

How to overcome procrastination, and why "just do it" is absolutely NOT the solution.

For me it is a matter of 'force myself to do it until it becomes a habit'. This isn't just writing, it's exercising, it's cleaning up my diet(side benefit of severely cutting sugar and fat is the foods don't taste right after a few weeks).

Any of you ever got burnt out with reading?

Yes, I have had it with reading and watching shows. It always for me has been tied to stress, overwork and exhaustion. College and work killed hard-core sci-fi for me. My recommendation is take some time off from it, focus on getting more sleep and unwinding. I also found when I started...

    Favorite Holiday sweets

Yup. It's a very very dark purple so looks black. Has a nutty flavor like brown. I prefer it to brown. Very tasty in both sweet and savory dishes. If you cook it in a rice cooker, it is cooked at a ratio of 2 parts water to one part rice. Use the brown rice setting. https://a.co/d/06lpjkQ

Here we call those Bullseyes or Buckeyes. Very yummy. My mom makes batches of Lebkuchen and Springerle(complete with the embossed designs) every year. I have to ration them out to not eat them all in a couple days.

The scale of time in fantasy stories

It is not just in fantasy novels: I remember when I was in Scotland once, I went on a tour, and at one point, on reference to an event in the 1200's went 'and that's why we hate the English.' Also, finding out that Edinburghs 'new town' is still over two centuries old. It was started before...
