How brutal should your character's backstop be?

As long as it makes sense with the story and the character, go as dark as you need to. If it is too out of place it can be very jarring and break the readers immersion.

    Why do you read?

I don't. I just look at the little black and white photos scattered all over my bound bundles of paper or covering my phone and tablet screen.

A question for those who read bl and gl, why?

Because honestly, it seems like the authors of the BL and GL genres put more effort into their characters and stories. I mean sure, you get tropes being repeated and some that are just good trashy fun, but generally they are more interesting, and more reasonable.Try reading 'regular' romance...

Is juggling different projects a good idea?

Write short stories placed in the world of your main story. Doesn't have to feature the main characters or even the minor characters but can allow you to expand and flesh out your world building. Gives you a break from your main.

What is the biggest mistake a new writer can make?

Following my advice? Joking aside, getting too hung up on word count and thinking that 'I wrote this so I have to use it'. Don't be afraid of revisions. A computer you can save multiple versions of a story or chapter and then pick/combine the one that works the best.

    Open Ended vs Wrapped Up

Like the title says. Do you prefer the stories you write(or read) to have open endings or everything wrapped up. What makes a bad ending for you?

    Thoughts about Utah

I lived in Ccolorado for over a decade after college, so right next door. Utah has some of the most beautiful national parks. Arches by Moab is great. Protip- go in late fall/winter when it's cooler and less tourists. If you can, come into Moab along 128 which runs along the Colorado River, it...

Does anyone have as much fun when writing? / Why hate your own creation?

It's a love/hate relationship. Right now I'm in the 'hate' stage. I do better with short horror stories but am trying a longer adventure/fantasy and struggling with the minutiae, the things that happen between the big scenes.

Anybody here get a rabies shot?

I did get the yellow fever shot, which is apparently the third most painful shot you can get.... imagine someone taking a metal pen and jabbing it into your shoulder, in the exact same spot, as hard as they can, over and over again. It feels horribly bruised and you don't want to use that arm...

Anybody here get a rabies shot?

It depends on when this occurred... the old vaccine could take 30 shots, near the site of the wound and apparently hurt alot. The new regime is 2-4 shots in the arm, like a flu shot. But it does have side effects- soreness, nausea and vomiting are pretty common. Anaphylaxis is fairy rare... like...

    How bad are bad guys?

There is a place for both. Absolute evil characters have been a staple of great stories for ages. Sauron and Morgoth from Tolkiens works come to mind. There is also a case for more nuanced characters, the ones who are the Villain but still have some good traits. If done well, you can make the...

    Physical Copy or Digital Copy?

I prefer physical, but really only do digital now. The after effect of living out of a van for 3 years- it teaches minimalism.
