Does putting the LitRPG tag make your story more attractive?

Yes. The effect is significantly more noticeable on Royal Road, but I promise you that there is a plethora of people here as well who will read every single thing that even slightly implies it has a system involved. I have met many readers who have admitted that they will basically read every...

Why are 'Chapters' and 'Word Count' and not 'Pages' used as the main metric for story length when searching on this site?

This is true... for traditionally published novels or even just self-published novels bought through commercial platforms. Not web serials. Chapters give readers a better idea of the release rate. It doesn't matter whether you're posting a single 50,000-word chapter a month or a single...

Yeah, you make some great points. I think maybe we just have different expectations for people. When I read stuff like this, what I gather from it is that people are easily manipulated and only care about seeing positive numbers and the presence of reviews rather than actually reading the...

"For example, research by one of us (Mike) found that higher Yelp ratings lead to higher sales" "I find that a restaurant’s average rating has a large impact on revenue - a one-star increase leads to a 5-9 percent increase in revenue for independent restaurants, depending on the specification."...

Considering that SH is going to attempt ads later on, and look into other means of making profit if ads don't work out, yes. It is a business. Or rather, let's just change "business" to "a service/platform that has the intention of making profit from what it offers" for the sake of this. It's...

    A few little ideas

Unfortunately, they're helpful for businesses to have, and most people like the idea of trying to assign objective quality/value to subjective art. I'm all for burning the rating system down and making people write thorough, in-depth reviews reliant on critical thinking if they want to review...

    A few little ideas

Just as a disclaimer, I really don't think that this whole thing is as big of a deal as some might, but I do find it interesting to discuss and think about. Anyways, I can understand this point of view. However, as authors are also users of the platform, that makes them customers as well. If...

    A few little ideas

At least as far as reviews go, the number one complaint I see regarding why we don't have more is because it's out of the way. They're in a separate tab that you have to open up, whereas on pretty much every other web serial platform, all you have to do is scroll down and you'll see the reviews...

    A few little ideas

It is true that every little bit of effort added will stop more people from leaving ratings and reviews. That's why I'm against forcing people to leave reviews or attaching reasons to their ratings. Do that and the "quality" of reviews might go up, but it's going to cause a significant decrease...

    A few little ideas

I really don't think it would lead to witch hunts or threats from authors or anything any more than being able to see the names of reviewers does. Would it happen? Probably, I'm sure. Even in my time on Royal Road, you could find reviews where the reviewers updated their reviews to say that the...

Notifications are always better, imo. It's like... if you go to your email to check your new email, wouldn't you rather the new emails be highlighted or be in a separate list other than randomly tossed in with all the rest? Heck, I had no idea that your story was updated, being the only one that...

Agree with the main three suggestions. As for that last suggestion... heck, I'll agree with it too now if it's only the author being able to see who left the rating.

Received 4 1-star ratings because another author accused me of stealing and cropping someone's else cover image

Don't you know that you're supposed to say things I disagree with instead of making me agree with you like this? smh. It's the whole point of our relationship. I 100% believe you should continue pursuing this to make sure that everything is fair if you're concerned. It's just something that...

Received 4 1-star ratings because another author accused me of stealing and cropping someone's else cover image

Just to use one of my own poor commenters as an example, this is how you can delete the comment from your chapter. Click the drop-down icon on the right of the comment and hit delete! Should have thought about explaining this much sooner, so apologies for being so delayed with that.

Received 4 1-star ratings because another author accused me of stealing and cropping someone's else cover image

For future reference, people can't remove their own ratings. If the 1-star ratings were removed, that means they either changed their ratings to positive ratings or Tony (the site owner and only admin) manually removed them (which you can tell is the case if the total amount of ratings went...

Received 4 1-star ratings because another author accused me of stealing and cropping someone's else cover image

It was talked about in the Discord server, so I wouldn't be surprised if people who were watching the conversation hopped over to the story to 1-star it because it was being accused of having a stolen cover. I wouldn't be surprised if the comment caused one or two them as well. It looked exactly...

When is the Best Time to Post?

When your chapter is ready to be posted. Posting when the most people are online (evening hours for EST timezone) to read your story also means posting when there is the most competition for recent updates. Posting when there are the least people online (middle of the night for America) also...

    Reader Fame

I get why people might feel that way, but most people love achievements or feel indifferent at worst. And it's for SH, not SHF. Achievements motivate people to comment more, to review more, to write more - I'm a filthy slut for achievements, personally. Many, many others are achievement-driven...
