How do you write fighting scenes?

I'm no master of combat, but I have had regular fire arm training during my time in the military, and some basic unarmed combat training on my own time. When doing something that has a habit level of automation, you do generally have the time to either A) pick options of which action to do or...

No, transformations aren't supposed to hurt! =P

I have innate and spell based transformation be (usually) painless, though not necessarily comfortable at first. But curse-specific transformations, that are meant to punish the person each time they transform? those are going to hurt. In certain scenarios, infusing a person with a permanent...

Have you guys ever had a really good idea for a story that you didn't pursue/expand on?

I have a ton of ideas in a file I have for keep track. I have not expanded on most of them, yet. I have occasionally dropped off an idea in a thread on a related topic, if it's not an idea that is too tightly bound to my world and would be a minimum of five years before I *might* start working...

    Power Creep

My solution was to A) soft-cap advancement. You will reach a point where you can't progress quickly, no matter how good you are. B) I knew the power the main antagonist was going to have as soon as I figured out who he was (I am primarily a Panster), and I knew all power progression had to be...

Writing Should I explain the power system/characters of my story in a dedicated chapter?

No. 1) Mystery is good, it means there is more to learn. 2) Interweaving little bits of it as a character learns it makes it more a part of the world and gives it more depth and flavor. 3) What you are describing is a form of exposition. And entire chapter of exposition? No, never do that...

    POVs?

That reminds me: in Beware of Chicken, the main character. Jin, is done in first person, while anytime that the perspective is anyone else's, it's in 3rd person.

    POVs?

Personally, I prefer (and write in) third person close, so the 'camera' hangs over the PoV character's shoulder. This lets me show the world from each PoV character's perspective, emotionally as well as physically. For me, it's the right blend to use with past perfect tense.

    Need writing advice.

For me, I just started with writing the opening scene in my head and rolled on from there. However, What I did from there was as I discovered more about the characters and world from writing them, I also discovered links to potential antagonists. I built up those connections, and then made one...

Question about fair use of places in a story.

Based on the success and lack of lawsuits for the Dresden Files, which makes many pop culture references and allusions, I think you would be fine within limits, such as making sure you do not cast anything in a bad light. The MC's favorite fast food place is Burger King, he wear star wars...

Would your OC be a good digimon tamer?

Depends on the sort of knowledge they would need going in. None of them have anyway of knowing anything about digimon or digital worlds or anything. Kazue will make friends with all the cutest ones. 'partner' or not, all her new friends will pay some attention to what she wants/needs, and woe...

Are there any successful SLICE OF LIFE stories?

It depends on how 'pure' the slice of life needs to be for you. "Beware of Chicken" and "The Wandering Inn" are considered heavily slice of life and are very successful. My story, "No Need For A Core?", also has a lot of slice of life elements and is at least a little successful. But all of...

How do you write fighting scenes?

Geeze, I just realized that quoting my text chopped off some of it from visibility. Um, so the stuff in my spoiler above is now a lot longer.

    What is your secret potion?

My big 2 drinks are Dr. Pepper and Bing Beverages (https://bingbeverage.com/) energy drinks. They appear to have dropped the Raspberry line, which is good. I don't know anyone who liked that flavor. I can recommend Crisp, Cherry, and Blackberry. Blue berry is sort of weirdly neutral, but could...

    Plot questions for everyone.

Exactly. This is how I write as well, and what makes my story character driven.

    Plot questions for everyone.

You do indeed seem to be ESL. That sentence contradicts itself. Plot-driven stories are stories where the plot is what does the driving. You say that plot-driven stories don't exist, then you describe a plot-driven story and say it is the thing that exists/happens. What you put before the...

The deliberate overuse of "Yandere" tag needs to stop.

Hmm. I *technically* have single yandere-ish character who is introduced late into the story. And she has a major impact on the story from there. ? But no, I don't think it would be appropriate to throw that tag on, not nearly central enough to the story. Tags should be exact.

    Plot questions for everyone.

I think you have misunderstood the terminology. Your last sentence contradicts itself. A plot-driven story is driven by the plot. i.e. the plot is doing the driving. A character-driven story is driven by the actions of the character. i.e. the characters are doing the driving. Compare to the...

Chosen One or The Power Runs in the Family?

Here's some variants for you: 1) Chosen One because of circumstances. The character is not perfectly unique, but they get Chosen because they A) have the right personality traits and B) are in the right place at the right time. See Green Lantern and Captain America for examples. 2) Special...

    Plot questions for everyone.

Character driven: The characters have goals and challenges that have little, if anything, to do with any antagonistic force. They are building or doing something for their own sake. Not in response to the presence of a villain or a natural disaster. This is the thing they *want* to do. Plot...

    I have a Question

I would say character driven is the slightly more important one. It would be easier to read something that was all character driven all the time than it would be to read something that was all plot driven all the time.
