    Because some guy was told to find a way to differentiate bots from people, and he knew it to be impossible but had to come with something plausible? Or he might have done it on his own, out of pure malice.
    And it has worked, regardless. Millions are forced to do something bots can do much better, to prove they aren't bots, and no one questions it.
