Hi guys, I am totally not working on my novels (plural if I include porn) right now and am a bit bummed out.

See, we are used to the traditional "Blue Screen" of Status and Stats for a LitRPG and how to earn points. For some it is through murder (EXP), level up (again EXP), skill mastery (still EXP), currency (the first I saw is in 全球高武), picking up stats (from the Stop, Friendly Fire!) so I had tried to ponder on some other methods to gain Ability Points/ EXP/ etc points for the system and displays of them.

Naturally I am trying to showcase a mage and would instead of having the lad just eat books, level up through reading, I have decided to have him gain points through fame.

The problem comes with what I wanted to do with his system display and then how the fame points are displayed as.

Library, for spell books that he needs to unlock, different shelves signifies the level of spells within.

Tower, because there are so many attributes to be found within the magic community, I have plans for the lad to have multiple towers for each individual attribute and within each tower are different levels, if he unlocks an attribute tower and its respective levels, he can use the same attribute spells with more efficiency.

Ps. I had plans to merge the two ideas but felt too annoyed.

Tree, cuz growth and ytf not?

How about going cultivation style and instead of meridians and veins you cultivate brain synapses and the more you train the more you have better mental facilities, calculation speeds, comprehension, and higher mana capacity if you also train your body to some extents.

Is this 'status screen alternative' an actual tree/tower/library in the real world, or something intangible, like a mindspace?

I'm leaning towards the tree, where the size of the tree represents the raw power/level, while distinctly different branches/fruit/petals represent different abilities/types of magic.
You could also go with different magics having different displays - nature magic being a tree, necromancy a graveyard...

I have seen a concept in Ryn of Avonside, where, simply put, mages have a grove, a garden of sorts in another dimension, the bigger the grove, the more power they have, different 'plants' planted in the grove represents the spells the mage can cast and their number the power that can be put into those spells.

THAT good sir, is genius. I would have it more as a mindscape than an actual dimension though. But still a brilliant idea.

The thing with the library and with new shelves appearing and/or unlocking as the mage learns and grows stronger is the better to me. But if not, then @Arkus86 's idea is definitely worth some thought too.

...Unfortunately, the swordsman took the role of that. But I can consider, thanks.
Constellations. Hail Skyrim.

The moron got that part.

Mindspace, because he has to spend the fame points he earn to unlock key features. Err, weird that you did not vote tree though.

Different trees are a good idea. I'll admit that. I kinda got the idea from a japanese manga though.

Ok, so there are four players in the system, each has their own depiction of the system.

There is the Swordsman, the Saintess (Idol), the Mage and the Moron.

For the mage, he has to deal with the absurd amount of magic branches popping up solely because of politics.

Basic types: Fire, Wind (Air), Earth, Water (Ice and Steam), Lightning, Wood (Plant), Metal, Void (Spatial), Light, Dark (Shadow), Time (Accelerated Aging, Fate Alteration and Clairvoyance)

Special types: Direct Mana Manipulation, Healing (Life Magic), Telekinesis (Using Willpower instead of mana)

"Evil" types: Necromancy, Blood Magic, Bone Magic, Flesh Magic, Skin Magic, Mind Control (Slavery Magic is somehow okay)

If you have the time to tell, the magic attributes above can be split into just the usual eight.

FIRE, WIND, EARTH, WATER, LIGHTNING, NATURE, LIGHT AND DARK.

Some can argue Earth and Water (maybe Wind) would cover Nature (Wood) but then again it depends on the author. I just like to overcomplicate things.

By the way, you may think that constellations are a joke answer but it isn't. I think it can synergize well with the currency you are using, fame. The more fame, the brighter the star. The brighter the star, the easier it is to track down the next star in a constellation. Combine it with a fact that there are a lot of different constellations. And each star can act as either a key to a certain spell or a part of spells. Pouring fame into a star you can make it grow brighter(more famous\easier to notice), and with the light of the said star, illuminate the future possibilities\stars.

There was a Chinese BL novel that had an interesting system for showing growth:
Element users would get a tattoo-like symbol on their face that appeared naturally. The more symbols, the more powerful the person was.
Another part was for the MC who was in a karma system that evolved into a faith system, too.
The karma system was that for every good deed he did, he would gain points that could unlock rewards; for every bad deed he did he would be punished.
As for the faith system, he gained faith points depending on how many people believed in him as a divine being.
It was an interesting read.
Oh, at some point the MC got his own dimension he could escape into - which was an exact replica of his lab he had in his past life with some added features. This dimension eventually expanded to be a vast landscape with mountains and a little house with a library and tree in it. If he wanted to learn/recall some information he'd previously gathered he could simply touch a book and absorb its contents. As for the tree, he could spend his faith points with it to create miracles.

Don't know if this helped at all...sorry if it didn't.
If you're ever interested in the story, it's on Novel Updates and is called: Banished to Another World.

I didn't, after awhile I just think that it reminded me too much of 九星毒奶.

Fame thing has been done in cn xianxia types before. Its called faith system there instead. Though a bit different, in that its related to their cultivation and not skill points [unless its a system type novel]. Imo, fame/faith leans more towards divinity than being a mage. You can go with priest spellcaster route with this, but mage is a bit pushing it. I thnk it contradicts their basic feature, that is learning.
As for the system display, tree is better imo. It gives u more diversity with many branches, leaves, etc. Tower and Lib. will either be monotonous or will hit their limits very soon.

Ok let me explain abit.

The Moron has the simplified system that forces him to earn points via money.

The swordsman has the system that increases his talent everytime he finishes a sword stance to perfection.

The Priestess gains new healing powers everytime someone prays to her and her goddess (Idol/ Faith System)

The Mage on the other hand, comes from a fallen house and wishes to bring back the fame of his family, thus I decided to align him with fame.

In a sense, both the Priestess and Mage clash as they have similar things due to the priestess requires people to have faith in her while the mage wants prestige. I could change the fame collection into something like medal collection whenever the mage achieves something great though.

As for limits, *chuckle* there are of course limits, something they will soon hit because they will know that they are mere pawns in a game by higher beings.
