First off, thanks for all the useful advice on writing romance. I really appreciate it.

So I took your suggestions and tried to put them into practice.

But my next problem is a bit... embarrassing.

I'm currently writing a very explicit 18+ fanfic. Not full smut, but...kinda there. I thought, okay, let's start with an outline. I already had a spicy scene in my head. I just needed to put it into words that could actually make readers feel...you know. Ahem. Anyway, I start writing. I'm starting to feel things. The mood is setting in.

And then my mom walks in.

Just like that... spell broken.

No fault of hers. She's a sweet person, bless her. She came because I'd asked her earlier to drop my laundry in my room. So really, this is on me. But it got me thinking, and now I have a question for all of you:

Can you write intimate scenes with someone else in the room?

If not, do you ask them to leave? Or do you just keep writing and pretend they're not there?

Or do you give up entirely and wait until you're alone again, maybe another day, another time?

Asking for a friend. The friend is me.

I work on my stuff all the time, regardless of who is, or is not, around me, and even let people read some of the scene drafts in person, regardless of the content involved, because we're all adults, and it affords me a perfect opportunity to get real feedback right then and there, on the story and scene premises. Especially those that deal with romance and erotica, because those are very much outside of my "usual" authorial themes and elements.

That may also be because I don't feel the trappings of the social constructs that are guilt, or shame. Especially when it comes to my authorial voice and artistic expression. Perhaps this is one of the upsides of being someone with ASD, but those are simply burdens that I'm not willing to carry. The only precautions that I take with my narrative content, are more out of a mindfulness for the comfort level of those around me, but this is more of a learned behavior, than anything related to how I feel about my writing.

I can write my smut scenes anywhere. I even write them on my phone during lunch at work. No matter if my colleagues are having lunch with me. And yes, I've written them even if my mom is in the room. She just visited the whole weekend (we live very far apart, so when she visits, she stays overnight), and I'm too hooked on writing that I could take a break for two whole days. So when she was just watching the news on TV, I kept writing with my laptop next to her.

And my mom knows what I am writing. I've always been very open about my sexuality, so writing smut scenes doesn't feel embarrassing at all. So I just don't have any problems doing that while others are around. Of course, I don't tell all of them what I am writing. 😅 I'm not announcing it to everyone. But a few of my colleagues also read my stories here, so they usually ask what kind of scene I am writing when they see me during lunch. And if there really is a smut scene going on, I'm honest about it. I have no need to hide what I write.

I can't write anything with anyone even near the room. I hear footsteps, the window gets switched to my email until they leave. I don't know why I'm like this. I'm sorry that happened to you, though I was expecting your mom to see what you were writing so, could've been worse. 😅

When I get into writing, I lose track of everything else for a while (one reason I stopped trying to write during breaks at work). When I get in that state, it doesn't matter if I'm alone or there are ten people in the room - unless one of them somehow distracts me, and then I will usually get a bit embarrassed, not so much at what I'm writing but more that I was "caught" writing at all...

Well... I write anywhere and anyone around. All I care is that they shouldn't come to know what I'm writing or shouldn't notice my bulge if I'm writing one of 'those' scenes. I really go inside my writing 😌
