What has been your WORST D&D/AD&D fail roll of all time?

It's funny that I actually remember mine all these years later, but tell me, former/current D&D playmates, what was your worst fail roll you remember doing?

Mine was killing another player with an errant arrow. I let fly a short-bow arrow while we were fighting some kind of creature in a densely wooded area, so long-range weapons were a challenge. I remember I didn't have any magic left, so when my turn came, I asked if I could somehow get within 50 feet of the monster(s). I was told, yes, I could, so I rolled to attack with a short bow. Well, it came up a 1, and the DM glanced at his notes. My arrow bounced off two trees and sailed back towards us, causing everyone to duck and lose a turn - except one unfortunate man who was weak on HP to begin with, and was trying to rest against a tree.

My arrow took him right in the chest for 10 HP and he died.

Ooopsie. ?

I've only played one game of D&D when my friend was trying to reach me how to play. He dropped me into a gladiator arena and had me fight a ninja.

I rolled a 1.

The ninja rolled a 1.

I rolled a 1.

The ninja rolled a 1.

I rolled a 1.

The ninja rolled a 1.

I rolled a 1.

The ninja rolled a 1.

My friend: "You and the ninja stand on complete opposite sides of the arena and swing your swords, wondering why you aren't hitting each other."

A month or so ago, I was trying to TPK my players in an epic battle to end the season of our podcast.

Out of 28 attacks with the marilith I was using alone, only 4 hit... all 2s to 7s while the lowest roll this party had against the marilith was 17 plus their modifiers...

Suffice to say, they are still going strong

I was playing a game with some friends, and my character was dumb. She went away from the group into a pack of wolves, and I tried to run away from them. I failed the climbing roll and got eaten to death. This was like the first 30 minutes into the game.

I've been really growing fond of shows like "Harmonquest" and "Critical Role" lately, and...I admit I'm getting the D&D bug again after...gods...30 years or so. *^^*

?Sorry, that's just really funny...but very very sad. *^^*
Did you create a new character immediately, or sit out for the night and watch the others?

They wouldn't let me play anymore. I had to wait for their game to end. So basically, I just went to my own little corner and started writing in my journal.

Oh, so unfair.
But I guess it could be fun to sit there and watch too, and maybe ask questions of the DM.

Honestly just sounds like the DM didnt like you.
Oh, not at all, we were all really close. Scott (DM) was probably the best DM we ever had. Smoked a lot of weed, and shared with us. Nothing quite as much fun as playing D&D when everyone's high. ? ?

Were you even playing D&D when that arrow killed him? They all have various types on 'downed state' and unless he was on like 1 health with a negative con modifier 10 damage isnt enough to kill anyone outirght.

Well, this was back in the early 1980s; I don't know how you guys play these days, i haven't rolled a dice since 1997, sad to say. ? I kind of remember the storyline; I know we started out in a temple, then headed out into the forest. But we were met with a group of orcs (I remember now that I checked my D&D book) and our fearless party leader thought "Oh, we can handle them!" An hour later. my friend Paul was dead, and Scott was on the floor laughing. ?

If the characters were all still level 1 he could of been inside the massive damage threashold, but level 1 characters dieing to stupid shit in some of the older editions is common. I know my group had its fair share of level 1 deaths with the D&D 3rd edition and then later with pathfinder.

My group moved away from the D&D franchise ~15 years ago, althoug hwe still had a look at 4th & 5th edition. These days we are mostly playing Pathfinder 2 (pathfinder 1 was an offshoot from D&D3.5) The systems themselves have become more streamlined and overall less breakable when it comes to making hyper powerful characters.

As for actual play, thats going to come down to how closely your table follows the rules and what kind of optional rules you are bringing.
