I've been a successful writer for over 30 years and have struggled for over 30 years. I haven't once been able to measure my success in monetary value. But I have measured it in terms of the happiness and satisfaction of my clients. I mean, I've been writing mostly for them all this time. If you're a seasoned freelance writer, you know the score. You write what you're asked to write - and you have a limited amount of time to write "for yourself". *^^* I'm probably not going to make a big splash anywhere I end up in the social media circles, and I don't really need to, or want to.

Because then, I'd be committed. No, literally. lol I'd be committed because I would go crazy from the commitments I would need to make. People need to understand that fame comes with a terrible price - your life. It's not yours anymore, it's your fans. I feel for the people having to crank out stories every other day just to make readers happy. That's not the kind of life I want. No one should want a life where they're "stuck" having to entertain others 24/7/365.

So take some heart if you're not highly famous or swimming in wealth right now. Some people just aren't meant to do it, because they could never handle it. Strive to be the best writer you ever read. Enjoy the writing you do, have the confidence that it's great, and the rewards will come to you, I promise.

Vast majority of people posting on site like this are amateurs, without any training or education in creative writing, and most of them don't even have any special ambition to become professional writers either. It's something they do in their spare time, not a job, or any kind of commitment.

Replace one of the "o"s with a "u" and it becomes even more true... :D

Well, that certainly is good to hear. From the discussions I saw here, it seemed like a lot of authors are upset over not getting enough attention. I just wanted to let them know that sometimes just getting the attention of the real lovers of their work is enough. No need to please everyone.

So if a person just wants to write, all the more power to them. Yet if they want to get more from their writing they should rethink their ways? Did I get it correctly? Or am I misrepresenting what you've just wrote?

I am certain that many amateur writers are upset by the fact it is very hard to get any views, that's true, but it has very little to do with the things like entitlement or commitments, it's merely the reality of the sites like this - that discoverability of the new works is very low, regardless of quality, and there isn't any reliable way to work around it. No one knows your story exists and nobody shows up to read it.

...however, this thread is simply another reaction in the long running merry-go-round of trolling, and has nothing to do with that.

Perhaps re-think the way to do it, yes, that's fair. And it makes sense. Writing just to write and not be saddled with the stress of commitment, or fan-bases, or money woes, and still having a good enough life would be ideal for me. But since I write as part of a living, I've had to handle those stressors. It's different because now you can't just write; you have to entertain. And if you're not entertaining, it's just not worth it anymore and you should go back to writing just to write. That's why people tell me at some places, "You know, I always wanted to be a writer", and I always ask them why. You'd be surprised how many people pause and think about that.

My brain isn't braining so I will tell it straight. Stop deciding for other people what they should think or what their goals should be. Because the way you wrote it before implies they are wrong for wanting more out of their writing. Which is simply not true, we are all different.

It is true that some people should chill and write for the sake of writing. Same as how some people should stop gaslighting themselves and be honest, and acknowledge they want more. Failing at realising what they want will lead both groups to dropping writing.

Well, as you've mentioned you're not thinking straight, I won't point out your misunderstanding me. *^^*

I'm not telling anyone what to do. I'm telling them they have to decide how they want their writing to go.
