I think one area of confusion for me is that I'm not even sure socialism is clearly defined in this thread. There is market socialism, for instance, which isn't wholly incompatible with popular mainstays of Western economics. The definitions are really ambiguous, and if you have certain beliefs, you might even call Alaska a "socialist state" because every resident gets a check for simply being alive, or Saudi Arabia is "socialist" because the state owns all the oil which accounts for like the majority of their GDP anyways.
All it really seems to me is that this is a debate between caricatures of "capitalists" and "socialists", but I'm really of the opinion that at least in America, the primary criteria for calling something "socialist" is if people don't like it.
