There are certain things that are not popular solely because of what they are, but also largely thanks to the culture surrounding them. It's a sort of feedback loop - things that are attractive for one reason or another, get popular, which in turn makes more people make attractive interpretations, and so on.

For foxes and fox girls, I believe it's got to do with the contrast, like between the mischevious, energetic personality and soft, fluffy exterior (tail in particular). It's just a great combination of physical and mental traits that appeal to a large number of people, both individually and together.

Cats, for example, have a significantly different set of traits typically associated with them. This doesn't mean much by itself, but like I mentioned, it's a feedback loop, and additionally there's a lot of chance in how popular things are. It just came to be foxes won.

(Also, specifically in regards to stories here on Scribble, I think a lot of people don't want a cat protagonist because cats and catgirls have been used a lot more in anime and other media and have a solid number of preconceptions and tropes. For foxes, there's been much less of that, and people created the tropes they like, which became popular here and normal for the site.)

I'm not sure where to post it, in reader or author subforum, so I will post it in general chat. Why foxes? :blob_hmm: Genuine question since cats are objectively more popular. No offense here since I am a dog person myself. Maybe it's me, but I rarely encounter stories with catgirls. On the other hand kitsunes and gumihos are everywhere. I guess there are also wolves, werewolves... Ahem... That's not something I want to discuss.

Back to our fox question. Why foxes and not, for example, owls? Or snakes? Snakes are a good one since a lot find them cute and there are lamias and whatnot. Yes-yes, I get it, foxes are cute, foxes are justice, sure. I just don't get why foxes specifically and not other cute animals? Or is it just me and I should broaden my horizon? :blob_hmm_two:

P.S. No bats, I meant brats.
Owls is crazy, you know how they don't move their eyes right? They just twist their necks like surveillance camera. It would be more horror and uncanny to viewers. As to foxes, idk either i dont like foxes as fox girls idk just not really see it appealing. I guess it would seem like they are more powerful since I see them mostly in fighting or action writings. And cat girls more for like non action stuff. Snakes would be better ong.

As for dog girls, i just dont like the rounded ears, and nose, it doesn't seem right, that's literally it.

one word: Smut.

No, really. Ever heard the term "foxy"? It's not describing someone to be sly, sneaky, or someone that digs a lot. Nope. It's related to someone's attractiveness. Ergo, foxes are sexy. at least, furries, anthros, and foxgirls. 'nuff said.

It was a huge mistake of mine not mentioning I was talking about SH specifically. Because foxes in manga are difficult to find. At least for me. It is always either a slime or this weird dog\wolf if we talk about pet. Ok, rarely it's a dragon. If we talk about monstergirls it is obviously catgirls. I don't think I ever saw a kitsune in a manga. I don't mean to say they don't exist, it's just I haven't encountered them, or don't remember them. Meanwhile catgirls are everywhere. I sometimes see kitsunes or gumihos in CN and KR webtoons. In case of CN webtoon there are usually many other monstergirls featured.

Ahem, with your answer comes a next question. If it's the usual, 'I don't want to be like everyone else' when do you predict a new trend will rise? Because foxes on SH are so overused, even catgirls are hard to find. Or, again, it's just me.

I remember two fox girls, one is from The Helpful Fox Senko-san you've probably seen somewhere at least in passing (important to note she is different from the regular fox girl on Scribble), the other is from Spirit Chronicles and it's far less known so you've probably never heard of it. For me that's it in manga and anime, so yeah, that's not much.

I think at this point the popular tropes are so diluted it isn't possible to properly predict when a new trend might appear. There was a time demons (particularly succubi) were rapidly growing in popularity, but it doesn't look like they reached or will ever reach the level of foxes unless something huge happens. In general, I think right now we need to wait for something immensely popular to appear before the trends change in a significant manner.

Foxes have all the benefits of both cats and dogs, while also being more exotic and fantasy. (Not pet as pet)
Also this is a community of degenerate weebs, cat girls and dog girls are too mainstream and vanilla here.

Why foxes? Why not foxes?

It is sort of like asking why one brand is more popular than another.

But I will try to explain anyways. Foxes are grouped in with the household pets of cats and dogs, yet are basically never kept as a pet.
You see cats crossing roads, dogs on walks, bunnies muching on plants, birds on roofs and trees, squirrels being chased by said dogs, deer wandering into towns, and more. Lots of commonly seen animals, but you rarely ever see foxes unless you go out of your way to find them.

Going off that, we know the behavior of various cat and dog breeds, but we usually resort to pulling fox personalities from their various mythologies. This sort of makes then a blank slate for the personalities of individuals.

Why not other not commonly seen animals? What about bears, snakes, spiders, bats, or frogs? Bears snakes and spiders we have been told to be careful of, even frogs to a lesser extent are often poisonous in tropical areas. Bats are also usually left out of thought (at least for me) because they are more region specific. We never are told to be wary of foxes when out hiking.
Looking at this another way, foxes have soft fur like many mammals, but a calm bear is a lot less common than a calm fox. Spiders, many people have aracniphobia. Snakes are smooth like lizards, smooth is a nice texture, but not as nice as soft IMO. Frogs are like snakes but slimy, and slimy is icky IMO.

Ulike many other animals, people are not threatened by foxes. They may have a reputation about being "cunning hunters" but they don't hunt humans.

More popular brands have more agressive marketing.

I never saw a deer in town. Also, we were told to be wary of foxes because of rabies. ?‍♂️ I'm not here to say you shouldn't like foxes. It's just, this explanation is not enough for me. People keep repeating same things over and over again, but I struggle to understand it from just that. I don't find those explanations exclusive to foxes. All I see are fans of foxes dismissing any need of elaboration, talking as if it's the most obvius thing in the world to like them. There is a lot of those "IMOs" and preferences in place. Sure, I guess it is obvious and natural for fox lovers to like them, however, I would like something more analytical.

That looks like a wolf with a fox-tail. The face is just not.....fox-like.
yet are basically never kept as a pet.
They are now. I know two guys that have one each, and a woman that has three.
There is also a Fox Protection Reserve a few cities over from where I once lived, that has a little over a thousand foxes living on it, and they sometimes let people adopt some of the young ones.

It IS the most obvious thing in the world. It's just that you are a heretic in need of "corrective thought-training,"......know what I mean?

I don't know if it is a case elsewhere, but keeping foxes is basically illegal here. You need a permit. Want to keep a fox as a pet? No, permit first. Want to raise them for furs? Nope, a permit. Want to sell hats from foxes? Nope, a permit. Hate foxes you want to shoot them? NO, PERMIT! At least pictures aren't on permit, but that's a matter of time.
